Prof. Roberto Fanti, professor at the University of Bologna and associate
member of the Institute of Radioastronomy, was one of the main figures of
Italian radio astronomy, recognized worldwide for his important
contributions in the field of physics and evolution of radio galaxies.
Roberto was also well known for being an extraordinary mentor, having
trained generations of radio astronomers.

The institute has decided to honor his memory by establishing a fellowship
dedicated to bright young researchers active in Prof. Fanti's research
fields.

The position is offered as a two-year term with competitive salary at the
INAF-Institute of Radio Astronomy (IRA) in Bologna. The INAF-IRA is one of
the 16 institutions part of the greater Italian National Institute for
Astrophysics (INAF).  IRA operates the 32m VLBI dishes in Medicina and
Noto, which are part of the European VLBI Network, and the Northern Cross
interferometer in Medicina.  IRA is a large radio astronomy institute
based on 3 sites (Bologna, Medicina, Noto) with scientific and
technological involvement in all the major radio astronomical projects
(ALMA, LOFAR, SKAO, and precursors); a LOFAR 2.0 station will be rolled out
and operated by IRA starting from 2026. It is located in one of the largest
campuses for Astrophysics in Europe, next to the premises of the
INAF-Osservatorio di Astrofisica e Scienza dello Spazio, the Astronomy
Department of the University of Bologna, and the CTAO headquarters,
providing a lively scientific and social environment.

The group the fellow will join is very active in the field of relativistic
astrophysics, in particular in the study of compact radio sources over a
large range of mass scales.  The group has strong involvement in
multi-wavelength and multi-messenger activities, especially in the follow
up of gravitational wave and neutrino events, and is very active on both
AGNs (and the connection to neutrino emission) and transients, such as
gamma-ray bursts, tidal disruption events, and more (with a connection to
gravitational wave detection). . IRA is  also open to new projects, as
long as relativistic astrophysics and radio astronomy can be a relevant
angle.

The position is offered for 24 months, starting as soon as possible
(ideally no later than April 2025), with a gross salary of 35000 EUR/year
(about 2600 EUR/month net), with an adequate budget for conferences and
hardware provided by the Institute.  There is a possibility of an
extension if funds are available. Italy has a fairly good public health
service, so the compulsory personal insurance should not be very
expensive.

The information provided here is aimed at providing sufficient context and
help to prepare an application.

The official information is given at this link[1]. For any other
information and advice in preparing the application, feel free to email
Dr. Marcello Giroletti (mgirolet en gmail.com, marcello.giroletti en inaf.it) or
the Directorate of the Institute (direttore.ira en inaf.it)

In order to participate in the selection process, you need to download the
