At CNRS’ Geoazur lab on the beautiful French Riviera, we are looking for
a Ph.D. student in
"SEISMIC BODY-WAVE TOMOGRAPHY WITH DATA FROM THE OCEANS"
Global-scale imaging of the earth’s mantle requires seismological data
from around the globe. While the continents have been increasingly
instrumented with digital broadband seismometers since the 1990's, this is
not the case for the oceans (two thirds of the earth's surface), except for
sparse stations on islands. This has started to change with the temporary
deployment of ocean-bottom seismometers (e.g., Barruol & Sigloch 2013) and
with the development and deployment of seismo-acoustic 'MERMAID' floats for
tomography (www.earthscopeoceans.org[1]), where Géoazur lab has been a
leader.
The primary objective of this Ph.D. project is to incorporate existing data
from oceanic seismological instruments more systematically into ray-based
and finite-frequency tomography models in order to improve their image
resolution. Using signal processing and waveform modelling methods, we will
properly account for the characteristics of the novel sensors, like the
fact that they are hydrophones rather than ground-seismometers, or
reflections within the water column obscuring the useful waveforms. We will
also explore the scientific potential of such data in synthetic tests, for
different spatial scales and geological settings.
There is latitude for the Ph.D. student to shape this project in a more
technical versus a more tectonic-geodynamic direction. Due to recently
increased data coverage, natural areas of application are whole-mantle
imaging in the Pacific Ocean, southern Indian Ocean, and/or in the
European/Mediterranean realm.

PHD STUDY IN EARTHQUAKE SEISMOLOGY AT THE RESEARCH SCHOOL OF EARTH
SCIENCES, THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY, CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA
PhD Student positions are available in the GEOPHYSICS Area of
the RESEARCH SCHOOL OF EARTH SCIENCEs at the AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL
UNIVERSITY. For more information about the Geophysics Area, please
visit: https://earthsciences.anu.edu.au/research/research-areas/geophysics
Expressions of interest are invited from highly qualified and motivated
students wishing to pursue a PhD degree focused on global earthquake
seismology. Successful applicants will join a research group interested in
various aspects of /global seismology /(observational and theoretical)
and /mathematical geophysics/. Opportunities exist to study EARTHQUAKE
SOURCE mechanisms using full waveform modelling combined with geophysical
inference and MOONQUAKES and LUNAR INTERIORS using existing waveform
data and data that will be available from future missions. The seismogenic
zones around Australia present opportunities to study earthquakes and the
seismic phenomena in /Antarctica /and the /Southern Ocean /using
complete waveform modelling and other emerging techniques. Furthermore,
exciting topics include exploiting large quantities of passive seismic
(and /infrasound/) data recorded by arrays to improve our knowledge about
the Earth’s interior and the interactions of the /solid Earth with the
oceans, cryosphere and atmosphere/. PhD positions occasionally include
participation in deploying seismic sensors across various parts of the
Australian plate (encompassing land and oceans) and consequent structural
and dynamic interpretation.
The applicants should have strong analytical and computational skills and a
background in physics, geophysics, mathematics, engineering, computer
science, or related fields. Once enrolled, all graduate students are
provided financial support for living expenses, including research stipend,
tuition and computer purchase/travel allowance. The current ANU PHD
SCHOLARSHIP IS A$ 38,154, and the most qualified candidates will be
automatically considered for the ALAN AND JULIA BECK SUPPLEMENTARY
SCHOLARSHIP (https://www.anu.edu.au/study/scholarships/find-a-scholarship/alan-and-julia-beck-supplementary-scholarship)
with additional annual support of about A$ 8,000. Information about RSES
and more details on the Doctor of Philosophy degree can be found
at: https://earthsciences.anu.edu.au/study/phd-mphil/doctor-philosophy
ANU Geophysics has been rated as the top university program in Australia
and among the top ten of its class worldwide. The Australian National
University is situated in the centre of the nation’s capital, Canberra,
between Lake Griffin and Black Mountain. The city is about a two-hour drive
from the beaches of the South Coast of New South Wales, about a two-hour
drive to the Snowy Mountains and Mt Kosciusko ski fields, about a
three-hour drive from Sydney, and a seven-hour drive from Melbourne.
Canberra is also the cultural heart of Australia, with the National Gallery
of Australia and the National Museum of Australia all a short distance from
the School.
Please send expressions of interest to Professor Hrvoje Tkalčić
at Hrvoje.Tkalcic en anu.edu.au before the 30th of April 2025. Please
enclose the following (PDF FORMAT ONLY):
* Cover letter
* CV including previous research experience; TOEFL or IELTS scores if
available
* Academic transcripts (both B.Sc. and M.Sc.)
* Statement of interest/research proposal (up to 2 pages + up to 1-page
