PHD POSITION
Dear colleagues,
we hope this email finds you well despite the current situation.
We currently offer a PhD position in the domain of critical zone
hydrogeology.
The work will involve probabilistic approach in hydrogeophysics to better
articulate geophysical data with hydrogeological
models (details in the attachment). This PhD project takes advantage of
available databases (geophysical and hydrogeological)
and associated simulations to: (1) characterize how uncertainties
propagate from geophysical data (field observation) to the
models (according to the methods used and the contexts involved); (2)
question the articulation between estimations derived
from these geophysical models and the hydrogeological models
parametrization; adapt or revise forward geophysical problems
to better satisfy modeling objectives; (3) Estimate the relevance of the
information transferred from geophysical models to
hydrogeological models and the associated propagation of uncertainties in
order to obtain more reliable calibrations.
We would greatly appreciate if you could recommend any suitable candidate
and forward the announcement to your network.
Best regards,
Agnès, Alexandrine and Ludovic

15 PHD
Dear colleagues,
The application deadline for the 15 PhD positions in the Innovative
Training Network SPIN „MONITORING A RESTLESS EARTH” has been extended
to April 5th, 2021!
We are LOOKING FOR 15 HIGHLY MOTIVATED PHD CANDIDATES, or
“Early-Stage Researchers” (ESRs).
We specifically ENCOURAGE CURRENT MASTER STUDENTS (or those pursuing
equivalent degrees), WHO EXPECT TO COMPLETE THEIR DEGREE IN 2021, TO
APPLY to the PhD positions. As long as your degree will be completed by
the time of recruitment in the project, you are more than welcome to apply!
SPIN will train 15 PhD candidates in emerging measurement technologies in
seismology such as DAS, large N arrays and rotational sensors. We will
develop survey designs that optimise this novel technology to improve the
monitoring of geohazards. Using models for the complex response of Earth
materials to stress, and the field observations from novel sensor types,
we aim to detect and exploit time-dependent material changes to improve
forecasting of real emerging natural hazards.
SPIN brings together a network[3] of excellent research departments,
industrial partners, observatories and governmental organizations. This
interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral network will enable the PhD candidates
to gain international expertise at excellent research institutions, with a
meaningful exposure of each candidate to other disciplines and sectors.
SPIN is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Marie
Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA).
PHD POSITIONS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE FOLLOWING INSTITUTES:
- University of Hamburg (Germany)
- LMU Munich (Germany)
- University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom)
- ETH Zurich (Switzerland)
- ISTerre Grenoble (France)
- Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (France)
- GFZ Potsdam (Germany)
- Dublin Institute for Advances Studies (Ireland)
- British Geological Survey (United Kingdom)
The positions will have staggered starting dates between May-October 2021
for a duration of 3 years.
For more information on the SPIN project, on application procedures, as
well as full descriptions of each PhD position, please refer to the SPIN

You can also follow and retweet us on TWITTER: twitter.com/spin_itn[4]
/PLEASE SHARE THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WITH ANY POTENTIAL CANDIDATES, ENCOURAGE
YOUR STUDENTS TO APPLY! AND PLEASE DISTRIBUTE TO INTERNAL MAILING LISTS AT
YOUR INSTITUTE./
Best regards,
Celine Hadziioannou (SPIN coordinator)
