to anyone else who might be interested?

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably
qualified candidate to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in
astronomy, to be undertaken in the School of Physics at The University
of Sydney, Australia, under the supervision of Professor Bryan
Gaensler. In this project, a student will develop new methods for
measuring astrophysical magnetic fields, and will then apply these
techniques to data from the Polarisation Sky Survey of the Universe’s
Magnetism (POSSUM). POSSUM is a major new survey to be undertaken
using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a
next-generation radio telescope. For more information on POSSUM, see
http://askap.org/possum . This is an exciting opportunity to develop
unique new skills in the emerging discipline of wide-field radio
astronomy. The successful candidate will be part of a strong and
dynamic research team working on a variety of activities related to
cosmic magnetic fields, astrophysical transients and high-energy
astrophysics.

Applicants must have completed the requirements for a first-class
honours degree (or equivalent) in physics or astrophysics. Skill at
oral/written communication, proficiency in a programming/scripting
language, and knowledge/experience of radio astronomy are all
desirable but not essential.

The scholarship is valued at A$26,669 per annum (tax exempt) and may
be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress
with a possible maximum extension of up to twelve months.  The
expected starting date is 5th March 2012, but earlier or later
starting dates can be negotiated.
