The Science Communication and Outreach (*Science Communication and Outreach

is taken by more than 150 students from a variety of master's and doctoral
programmes every year.  Lectures reflect on the societal impact of science,
the role of science communication and popularisation, and various aspects
of practice.   Besides the lectures, students also practice their practical
skills in communicating science, including through a group project.  In
groups of four, they work on a science communication project. This project
can take different forms: podcast, video, blog, visuals, game, app, etc.

Since last academic year, the group projects have been set up in
collaboration with organisations or institutions that (want to) do science
communication in order to achieve a win-win: students help develop a
science communication project that can be shared and get hands-on
experience in a real context.

That is why you are receiving this email.  Do you have lots of ideas but
little time?   Then feel free to suggest a project that our students can
work on for 8 weeks, which could lead to a helpful product sharing science
with a wide audience.

proposal.

*What is expected from you / your organisation?  *

   - An (online) meeting or exchange with the student team (late February /
   early March 2024) to introduce them to the topic and your ideas/wishes
   - Answering questions and giving feedback during the process
   - Giving feedback on the final result (May 2024)

   - If possible (not mandatory): attend the final event of the course in
   Leuven on May 8, where all group works will be presented
   - If desired (not mandatory): additional guidance and input, e.g., via a
   visit of the students to your institution

To give an idea of the kind of projects realised within this course, here
are some examples from last year:

   - *Story and activity book about the importance of flies for young
   children in community schools in Africa (DIPoDIP project, Africa Museum)  *
   - *Citizen Science awareness campaign (Royal Belgian Institute of
   Natural Sciences) *
   - *Video / blog / immersive story-based quiz for the International Polar
   Foundation *
   - *Video / survey / informative poster for the Einstein Telescope
   project  *
   - *Crash course on cancer for high-school students (VIB, Biotechnology
   Institute) *
   - *Exhibit about visual experiences (Leuven Brain Institute)  *
   - *Interactive teaching toolkit / card game on Artificial Intelligence
   (AMAI project, Scivil)  *
   - *Panels for Campus Arenberg (600th-anniversary KU Leuven, Faculty of
   Science)  *
   - *Scavenger hunt 'get-to-know-your-classmates' for incoming students
   (Faculty of Science) *
   - *Panels for KU Leuven booth at Nerdland festival (KU Leuven Faculty of
   Engineering Science) *
   - *Movie about the “camera obscura” phenomenon (SLAC Art Academy
   Leuven) *

*The timeline of the course is as follows:  *

   - February 14/21, 2024: first lessons and presentation of the themes
   - February 28, 2024: finalisation of themes and groups

… 8 weeks to work on the project …

   - April 24, 2024: submission of group work
   - May 8, 2024: presentation of group works (open event)

*Keep in mind:  *

   - This is a very international group of students in diverse courses from
   diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.  About half of the students do
   not speak Dutch fluently.  The subject is taught in English.
   - The results are sometimes a fully developed form of science
   communication, but more often, a prototype on which further work can be
   done within the organisation if desired.
