Hay elecciones para el Executive Committee de la IAU.

Se pueden sugerir nombres para los cargos ejecutivos nuevos. Esos cargo
son:
the next President-Elect and Assistant General Secretary (AGS), together
with three new Vice Presidents (VP).

El cargo de próximo Presidente de la IAU es un cargo como tuvo Sahade. No
sé si tenemos candidato para eso.

El cargo que más trabajo requiere (lean abajo) es el de Assistant General
Secretary (AGS) porque esa persona va a ser el/la nueva secretaria y es un
trabajo no pago y full time. Buscan una persona de entre 60 y 70 años o
más, activa y que viva en Europa porque tiene que viajar seguido a París.
Todo está aclarado en el mensaje de Debra Elmegreen.

Los tres Vicepresidentes, no tienen tanto trabajo, pero son los que votan
por todos los simposios y Focus Meetings que se aprueban, entre otras
cosas. En esta oportunidad hay que reemplazar a una persona que es de
América del Norte, una que es de América Del Sur y una de Japón (o sea país
del Este).

Bueno, lean todo lo que sigue abajo y espero comentarios y sugerencias de
nombres. Por ejemplo, Marta Rovira fue Vicepresidente hace unos años (no me
acuerdo el período).

Hay tiempo para enviar sugerencias hasta el 1 de mayo.

Estoy de vacaciones, pero trabajo... que se le va a hacer.

Dear IAU National Members and National Committees for Astronomy,

The IAU Special Nominating Committee (SNC) will work in the coming months
to put together a slate of the next Officers and Executive Committee (EC)
members: specifically, the next President-Elect and Assistant General
Secretary (AGS), together with three new Vice Presidents (VP). We request
your nominations by May 1. After SNC discussions,  we will contact
finalists in the coming months to discuss whether they would be willing to
serve. Once the SNC has finalized the slate, voting for approval will occur
at the General Assembly in Cape Town in August 2024.

Note that all positions are unpaid and that the Officer positions, most
notably that of the GS, require a significant time investment. Since the
AGS will become the GS after one triennium, and since the GS is the
critical position in the IAU, some comments on the profile are relevant.
The GS position is essentially a full-time job, with the primary duties
involving ongoing oversight and approval of finances, and preparation of
annual and triennial budgets. An efficient running of the IAU requires that
there not be parallel serious commitments, such as academic,
administrative, and teaching duties (these can still be carried on by the
AGS during her/his triennium, but the GS should be free to focus on the
IAU). Therefore the ideal candidate is one that, at the time she/he becomes
GS, is retired or can get an extensive (paid!) leave of absence, so this
suggests candidates roughly between 60 and 70 yr. The candidate should have
a strong astronomy background, an affinity for everything the IAU stands
for (see the IAU 2020-2030 Strategic Plan
<https://www.iau.org/administration/about/strategic_plan/>), some
administrative experience, and a willingness to spend significant time at
the IAU Headquarters in Paris. The GS position is unpaid but she/he will
have access to a small apartment in Paris, and transportation will be
covered.  Because of the regular Paris visit requirement (typically every
month), the GS traditionally has come from Europe.

The AGS, President-Elect, and President can work remotely from their home
institute. The AGS position is lighter than the GS but still involves
considerable work and travel (e.g., the AGS is on the Steering Committees
for the 4 Offices). The Officers are frequently invited to give speeches
around the globe, online or in-person. There is an annual in-person
Officers meeting in Paris as well as an annual in-person Executive
Committee meeting each spring.

Please send your nominations to me (elmegreen en vassar.edu) by May 1,
providing the name, institution, brief (max 1 page) summary or CV, and
motivation for suggesting the proposed candidate. The SNC would appreciate
diversity in the nominations, both in terms of nationalities and gender,
since we will seek a balance in the final slate. The current Officers and
EC members are noted below for reference, along with details of the terms
of service.

13.e. The General Assembly appoints a Special Nominating Committee to
prepare a suitable slate of candidates for election to the incoming
Executive Committee.

17. The Executive Committee consists of the President of the Union, the
President-Elect, six Vice-Presidents, the General Secretary, and the
Assistant General Secretary, elected by the General Assembly on the
proposal of the Special Nominating Committee.

II. SPECIAL NOMINATING COMMITTEE

9. The Special Nominating Committee consists of the President and past
President of the Union, a member proposed by the retiring Executive
Committee, and four members selected by the representatives of the National
Members from up to twelve candidates proposed by Presidents
of Divisions, with due regard to an appropriate distribution over the major
branches of astronomy.

9.a. Except for the President and immediate past President, present and
former members of the Executive Committee shall not serve on the Special
Nominating Committee. No two members of the Special Nominating Committee
shall belong to the same nation or National Member.

9.b. The General Secretary and the Assistant General Secretary participate
in the work of the Special Nominating Committee in an advisory capacity,
and the President-Elect may participate as an observer.

10. The Special Nominating Committee is appointed by the General Assembly,
to which it reports directly. It assumes its duties immediately after the
end of the General Assembly and remains in office until the end of the
ordinary General Assembly next following that of its appointment, and it
may fill any vacancy occurring among its members.
