SUPERNOVA 2012gi IN UGC 11922 = PSN J22085244+4020240
     T. Crowley, J. Newton, and T. Puckett report the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag 17.6) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 19.0) taken with a
0.35-m reflector at Portal, AZ, U.S.A., on Nov. 9.152 UT in the course of the
Puckett Observatory Supernova Search.  The new object, which was confirmed on
Nov. 11.089 at mag 17.2 on images (limiting mag 19.1) taken by R. Post with a
0.43-m reflector at Trenton, ME, U.S.A., is located at R.A. = 22h08m52s.44,
Decl. = +40o20'24".0 (equinox 2000.0), which is 20".8 west and 27".3 south of
the center of UGC 11922.  Nothing is visible at this position on images taken
by Puckett on 2011 Nov. 19 (limiting mag 19.4).  A finder image is posted at
website URL http://www.possdata.com/PSNJ22085244+4020240.jpg.  The variable
was designated PSN J22085244+4020240 when it was posted at the Central
Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2012gi based on the
spectroscopic confirmation reported below.  Additional CCD magnitudes
(unfiltered unless otherwise noted) for 2012gi :  Nov. 11.726, 16.7 (Joel
Nicolas, Vallauris, France; 0.41-m f/3.3 reflector; position end figures
52s.51, 24".2); 12.067, 17.0 (R. A. Koff, Bennett, CO, USA; Meade 0.25-m f/10
reflector + Apogee U-47 camera; limiting magnitude 19.6; position end figures
52s.47, 24".0; UCAC3 reference stars); 12.094, 17.0 (Joseph Brimacombe,
Cairns, Australia; luminance filter; position end figures 52s.50, 24".1;

12.739, 16.6 (Nicolas; position end figures 52s.51, 24".2).

     E. Kankare, C. Romero-Canizales and S. Mattila, University of Turku,
report that a spectrum of PSN J22085244+4020240 = SN 2012gi was
obtained on Nov. 12.9 UT with the Nordic Optical Telescope (+ ALFOSC; range
320-910 nm, resolution 2.1 nm).  Cross-correlation with a library
of supernova spectra using the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin
and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) suggests that SN 2012gi is a type-Ic
supernova with the spectrum showing similarities to those of SNe 1994I and
2004aw a few days before maximum light.  The authors further report that an
image obtained with the NOT on Nov. 12.9 provides an R-band magnitude of about
16.5 for SN 2012gi, corresponding to an absolute magnitude of about -18.5,
assuming a Virgo and Great Attractor corrected distance of 100 Mpc
(H_o = 73 km/s/Mpc) for the host galaxy, UGC 11922 (Springob et al. 2005,
Ap.J. Suppl. 160, 149).
