SUPERNOVAE 2009aw AND 2009ax
D. Sand, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and Las Cumbres
Observatory Global Telescope Network; M. L. Graham and C. Bildfell, University
of Victoria; D. W. Just, S. Herbert-Fort, and S. Sivanandam, Steward
Observatory; C. J. Pritchet and H. Hoekstra, Leiden University; and D.
Zaritsky, Steward Observatory, report that two supernovae wre discovered on
g'- and r'-band images obtained at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (+
Megacam). The publicly available "Supernova Identification" code (Blondin and
Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) was utilized for determining that both objects
are normal type-Ia supernovae from spectroscopy obtained with the MMT (+
Hectospec) at Mount Hopkins.
SN 2009 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. g' r' Offset
2009aw Jan. 25 6 31 47.08 +24 55 08.9 19.8 19.5 5".17 E, 4".28 N
2009ax Jan. 27 6 15 35.80 +48 18 50.0 20.4 19.9 0".82 W, 0".38 N
A spectrum of 2009aw taken on Jan. 29 UT shows it to be a type-Ia supernova
at z = 0.08 and close to maximum light; its host galaxy has magnitudes g' =
19.56 +/- 0.02 and r' = 18.78 +/- 0.01. A spectrum of 2009ax taken on Feb.
1 shows it to be a type-Ia supernova at z = 0.11 and 15-20 days after
maximum light; its host galaxy has magnitudes g' = 21.03 +/- 0.02 and r' =
20.49 +/- 0.01.
