VARIABLE STAR IN CANES VENATICI
     A. Dimai reported the discovery of an apparent supernova on unfiltered
CCD images taken with the 0.45-m telescope of the Mandi Observatory in
Pagnacco, Italy, by P. Corelli, G. Iafrate and himself in the course of the
CROSS program (cf. IAUC 7373). The new object, which appeared at mag about
17.5 on May 7.93 UT and mag about 17.0 on May 8.89, is located at R.A. =
13h58m26.20s, Decl. = +37o27'08".5 (equinox 2000.0), which is 3" west and 1"
north of the nucleus of the apparent host galaxy. CROSS images of the same
field taken on Feb. 28 showed nothing at this position (limiting mag about
18.5), nor does it appear on Palomar Sky Survey infrared, red, or blue plates.
A spectrogram taken with the 1.82-m Copernicus telescope at Cima Eckar
(Asiago) reveals that the variable is not a supernova but possibly an outburst
of a variable star superimposed on the galaxy (which is near NGC 5395). Images
