SUPERNOVA 2008ci IN MCG -01-1-5
     G. Pignata, J. Maza, M. Hamuy, R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P. Gonzalez, P.
Lopez, S. Silva, G. Folatelli, and D. Iturra, Universidad de Chile; and D.
Reichart, K. Ivarsen, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze,
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, report the discovery of an
apparent supernova (mag approximately 17.1) on an unfiltered image taken on
May 9.41 UT with the 0.41-m "PROMPT 3" telescope located at Cerro Tololo in
the course of the CHASE project.  The new object, which is also present in
a confirming image taken on May 10.40 at mag approximately 16.7, is located
at R.A. = 23h56m46s.02 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -2o38'18".6 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000),
which is about 2".8 west and 31".1 north of center of the galaxy MCG -01-1-5.
Nothing is visible at this position on archival images taken on 2007 Nov.
3.07 and 22.07 (limiting mag 18.0).
