A. J. Drake, S. G. Djorgovski, A. Mahabal, M. J. Graham, and R. Williams,
California Institute of Technology; T. A. Fatkhullin, V. N. Komarova, A. S.
Moskvitin, V. V. Sokolov, and T. N. Sokolova, Special Astrophysical
Observatory (SAO), Russian Academy of Sciences; J. L. Prieto, Carnegie
Observatories; M. Catelan, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; E. C.
Beshore and S. M. Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of
Arizona; and E. Christensen, Gemini Observatory, report the discovery of
five supernovae in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) images:
SN 2010 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag. Offset
2010jx Oct. 28.19 1 19 42.22 +30 24 49.2 19.2 0".9 W, 0".7 N
2010jy Oct. 30.15 23 09 43.58 + 5 41 56.2 16.5 6".6 E, 1".6 S
2010jz Nov. 2.40 7 17 15.74 +45 23 03.7 18.0 4".5 W, 1".5 N
2010ka Nov. 7.35 3 26 01.99 - 0 49 48.0 19.4 0".6 W, 1".6 N
2010kb Nov. 10.43 8 20 47.41 +35 53 37.5 18.1 0".9 W, 0".7 N
Further CSS magnitudes of 2010jx: Oct. 9.30 UT, [20.3; 17.30, 19.0; Nov.
11.27, 19.9. Further CSS magnitudes of 2010jy: Sept. 10.37, [19.8; 30.28,
17.2; Nov. 12.24, 16.9. Further CSS magnitudes of 2010jz: Oct. 10.41,
[20.1; Nov. 11.36, 17.9. Further CSS magnitudes of 2010ka: Oct. 30.40,
[20.2; Nov. 16.30, 19.3. Further CSS magnitudes of 2010kb: Oct. 17.46,
[19.2; Oct. 31.50, 18.8.
The supernovae were spectroscopically confirmed with SAO's BTA 6-m
reflector (+ SCORPIO; range 380-790 nm) on Nov. 9 and 10. SN 2010kb
exhibits a steep blue continuum and narrow Balmer emission lines
characteristic of a type-IIn supernova at redshift z = 0.075. Cross-
correlation of the remaining objects with a library of supernova spectra using
the "Supernova Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666,
1024) indicates the following best matches: 2010jx is a type-Ia supernova,
similar to SN 1995al at two weeks past maximum with redshift z = 0.11; 2010jy
is a type-IIn supernova, similar to SN 1998S at two weeks past maximum with
redshift z = 0.042; 2010jz is a type-Ia supernova, similar to 1995D just past
maximum at redshift z = 0.066; and 2010ka is a type-Ia supernova, similar to
2003du just past maximum at redshift z = 0.166.
