SUPERNOVA 2011az IN IC 3862 = PSN J12535343+3605193
T. Boles, Coddenham, England, reports the discovery by Maurice Gavin
(Worcester Park, Surrey, England) of an apparent supernova (mag 16.2) on an
unfiltered CCD image taken on Mar. 18.924 UT with a 0.30-m reflector. The new
object (measured by Boles) is located at R.A. = 12h53m53s.40, Decl. =
+36o05'19".6 (equinox 2000.0), which is approximately 6".6 north of the center
of IC 3862. The new object was designated PSN J12535343+3605193 when posted
at the Central Bureau's TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2011az based on
the spectroscopic report below. Additional magnitudes for 2011az (unfiltered
CCD unless noted otherwise): 1989 Mar. 30, [21.0 (Digitized Sky Survey, blue
plate; via Boles); 1990 Mar. 18, [20.5 (DSS, red; via Boles); 2006 Mar. 5,
19.5 (Boles); 2011 Mar. 20.434, 16.0 (Martin Mobberley, Cockfield, England,
remotely with a 51-cm GRAS II reflector in New Mexico; position end figures
53s.43, 19".3; measurements by Boles); 20.849, 15.9 (D. Buczynski and N. James,
28-cm reflector, Portmahomack, Scotland; position end figures 55s.39, 19".4);
21.075, 15.9 (D. Rich, Hampden, ME, U.S.A., 0.41-m f/5.6 telescope; position
end figures 53s.43, 19".3); 21.154, 15.3 (Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia,
remotely using a 51-cm RCOS telescope + STL11K camera at New Mexico Skies
Observatory, Mayhill, New Mexico; position end figures 53s.41, 19".2; image

D. K. Sahu, G. C. Anupama, and S. Arora, Indian Institute of Astrophysics,
Bangalore, report that PSN J12535343+3605193 = 2011az is a young type-IIP
supernova. A medium-resolution spectrum (wavelength range 350-920 nm) of
2011az, obtained on Mar. 21.93 UT with the Himalayan Chandra Telescope (+
HFOSC) at the Indian Astronomical Observatory, exhibits a blue continuum with
a broad H_alpha line. Using the SNID code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666,
1024), the spectrum of 2011az is found to be most similar to that of SN 1999em
around 1.0 day before maximum. The H-alpha absorption indicates an expansion
velocity of about 12000 km/s, corrected for the host galaxy's redshift,
estimated as z = 0.014 from the shift of the narrow Balmer emission lines in
the spectrum.
