SUPERNOVA 2011ay IN NGC 2315
J. M. Silverman and A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley,
report that inspection of a CCD spectrum (range 340-1000 nm), obtained by A. J.
Barth (University of California, Irvine), J. L. Walsh (University of
California, Irvine), and R. J. Assef (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) on Mar. 29 UT
with the 3-m Shane reflector (+ Kast) at Lick Observatory, shows that SN
2011ay (CBET 2678) is similar to SN 2002cx (Li et al. 2003, PASP 115, 453).
Cross-correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) finds
that the spectrum of SN 2011ay is similar to that of SN 2008A, at one day past
maximum brightness. The continuum is still quite blue, as mentioned on CBET
2678, despite showing Na I D absorption at the redshift of the host galaxy.
After removal of the host-galaxy recession velocity of 5900 km/s (measured
from narrow Na I D absorption in the host galaxy), they find the absorption
minimum of the Si II 635.5-nm line to be blueshifted by about 6300 km/s.
Further follow-up observations over a broad range of wavelengths are
encouraged.
