SUPERNOVA 2009ew
Further to CBET 1801, A. J. Drake, R. Williams, S. G. Djorgovski, A.
Mahabal, and M. J. Graham, California Institute of Technology; T. A.
Fatkhullin, A. S. Moskvitin, V. V. Sokolov, O. I. Spiridonova, and A. F.
Valeev, Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), Russian Academy of Sciences;
E. Sonbas, Cukurova University; S. B. Pandey, B. Kumar, and R. Roy,
Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences, Nainital; D. Y.
Tsvetkov, Sternberg Astronomical Institute, Moscow State University; D.
Balam, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, National Research Council of
Canada; M. Catelan, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile; E. C. Beshore
and S. M. Larson, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona; and
E. Christensen, Gemini Observatory, report the CRTS discovery of another
supernova in unfiltered Catalina Sky Survey images:
SN 2009 UT R.A. (2000.0) Decl. Mag.
2009ew May 16.33 16 38 59.85 +17 58 58.1 18.7
Further observations of 2009ew were taken with the Palomar 1.5-m telescope
(May 23) and the Plaskett 1.82-m telescope (May 20, 21, and 25) using Gunn
filters, yielding the following magnitudes: May 20.26 UT, g = 18.8, r = 18.8;
May 21.28, g = 18.7, r = 18.7; May 23.47, g = 18.7, r = 18.7, i = 19.1; May
25.4, g = 18.8, r = 18.7. A confirming spectrogram (range 400-900 nm) of
2009ew was taken with the BTA 6-m telescope on May 17 UT; with the aid of the
Supernova Identification code (SNID; Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024),
2009ew was found to be a type-Ia supernova, most similar to SN 2003du at
seven days before maximum, at redshift z = 0.09.
