Dear colleagues

It is our pleasure to invite you to the *1st SEVN school on binary
population synthesis, organized by the University of Padova (Italy) and the
Institute for Astronomy and Space Physics (Argentina), to be held in Buenos
Aires from May 6 to May 10, 2024*.

SEVN is a public, state-of-the-art numerical code recently developed by the
Demoblack Group at the Padova University (https://demoblack.com/), to
compute single and binary stellar evolution within the framework of
population synthesis. This technique, developed during the last 20 years,
allows the simulation of the evolution of many single or binary systems to
study the demography and properties of the population. SEVN has been
extensively used to study the formation channels of binary compact objects
and progenitors of gravitational waves, explore chemically homogeneous
stellar evolution, understand the impact of mass transfer and common
envelope in the evolutionary path and fate of binaries, and many other
aspects of binary evolution.

The School aims to introduce students and researchers in
population-synthesis simulations, and specifically in the use of SEVN.
Lecturers from the Padova University will provide the theoretical framework
behind the method, and also hands-on practical sessions to develop or
enhance the skills of the participants. No previous knowledge on population
synthesis is required, but at least basic skills in programming
(preferently in Python or C/C++) are expected. *Students are required
to** bring
a laptop to work during the Hands-on sessions. The official language of the
school is english.*
