POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN ASTRONOMY/ASTROPHYSICS OPEN AT THE VALONGO
OBSERVATORY, FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO

The Valongo Observatory of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in
particular, its Postgraduate Program announces the availability of
a postdoctoral fellowship STARTING BETWEEN MARCH AND APRIL 2024 and
funded by the federal research funding program, CAPES/PDPG.
Our Astronomy/Astrophysics program operates in five lines of research,
namely: Extragalactic Astrophysics, High Energy and Cosmology; Stellar
Astrophysics; Galactic Astrophysics and the Interstellar
Medium; Position Astronomy and Planetary Systems; and Astrobiology and
Astrochemistry.
 
The approved candidate will receive a monthly stipend of R$5200, in
addition to a research grant of R$1000/month. The position may last up to
24 months.

Researchers who earned their PhD from the Valongo institute itself after
March 2021 will not be considered for this position.
 
INTERESTED PARTIES MUST SEND THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS ELECTRONICALLY

a) curriculum vitae, including a list of publications
b) cover letter commenting on the reasons why the candidate took the
initiative to apply to this position (free format);
c) post-doctoral research project to be developed at the institution (up
to 10 pages)
d) two letters of recommendation, to be sent directly by the
reference-writers to the email above.
 
After a first analysis of the supporting documents, a pre-selection of
candidates will be made. The evaluating committee will compose a
shortlist of candidates to proceed with the selection process. The
short-listed candidates will be contacted for an interview (virtual
format), which will be based on the curriculum vitae and the research
project presented.
 
The selection and final ranking of candidates will be based on the project
submitted, curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation and the result of
the interview. The synergy with the local research groups and the potential
contribution to the growth of the Valongo Postgraduate Program, including
the publication of refereed articles and the establishment of external
collaborations, will be evaluated. The first person in the final ranking
will be invited to accept the position. In case of non-acceptance, the
program will invite the following candidates for the position according
to the order of the final list until the vacancy is filled.
