[Doctorandos] Mirando exoplanetas con el ELT

¡Hola!

¿Cómo fueron esas vacaciones de invierno? Porque el Journal arranca con
todo!
Hoy tenemos un Journal sorpresa, con la participación de Mathis Houllé.
Mathis acaba de obtener el título de Dr. en la Universidad de Marsella y
está pronto a comenzar un posdoctorado en el Laboratorio Lagrange en Niza.
Actualmente está de visita por nuestros lares y va a contarnos de su
trabajo investigando exoplanetas!

Más allá que la charla la va a dar en inglés, Mathis maneja algo de español
así que se le puede hacer preguntas en español/espanglish. Les dejamos el

*Direct imaging and spectroscopy of exoplanets with ESO's Extremely Large
Telescope*
*In the last two decades, several dozens of exoplanets have been directly
imaged, allowing a direct study of their atmosphere and formation process.
As planets appear very close and considerably fainter than their stars,
their observations require to reach the limits of instruments in terms of
angular resolution and contrast. For this purpose, high-contrast imagers
such as VLT/SPHERE or Gemini/GPI have been commissioned since 2015, using
advanced adaptive optics and coronagraphy to correct the atmospheric
turbulence and reach the diffraction limit of their telescope. The
technique has only detected so far planets that are very massive (> 5
Jupiter masses) and far from their star (> 10 au), but the coming extremely
large telescopes (ELTs) are expected to detect many more smaller and
closer-in planets. An additional path currently being investigated for this
is the combination of imaging with medium and high-resolution spectroscopy
to better disentangle the signals of the planet and the host star. I will
summarize in this talk some of the key developments of exoplanet imaging,
the gains of its combination with spectroscopy, and present a study (Houllé
et al. 2021) assessing the future capabilities for exoplanet imaging of the
HARMONI instrument on ESO's ELT.*
