    PHD POSITION IN ELECTROMAGNETIC (EM) SOUNDING OF SEA ICE

    We are looking for candidates for a fully funded, 3-year PhD position in
multifrequency, frequency-domain, electromagnetic (EM) induction sounding
of sea ice. The position is part of the “PORICE: Seasonal evolution and
spatial variability of porous sea ice” project funded by the Alfred
Wegener Institute’s (AWI’s) INternational Science Program for
Integrative Research in Earth Systems (INSPIRES) graduate program. It will
commence as early as June 2021, or shortly after. The position will be

The PhD project will advance inversion methods of multi-frequency,
frequency-domain electromagnetic induction (EM) sounding to retrieve
seasonal and spatial sea ice conductivity and porosity information. The
porosity of sea ice is a key property as it controls the ice’s physical,
ecological, and biogeochemical properties and the cryo-pelagic coupling
with the ocean. Sea ice porosity includes micro-pores related to brine
volume and macro-pores due to, e.g., pressure ridge keels and rotten ice.
Porosity is subject to huge seasonal variations and spatial variability. We
will use our extensive, year-long MOSAiC transect and airborne EM data, as
well as data from other Arctic and Antarctic field campaigns, to retrieve
weekly porosity information, and validate it with ice core and ROV data.
Results will be invaluable for the interpretation of concurrent ecological,
and biogeochemical, and remote sensing MOSAiC observations, as well as for
the analysis of past and future Arctic and Antarctic EM data.
The project builds on more than a decade of experience with inversion of EM
sea ice thickness and conductivity data, and has access to the latest EM
and computing infrastructure. It includes opportunities for own Arctic and
Antarctic data acquisition by the PhD candidate.
TASKS
·        Develop inversion software and process MOSAiC EM data
·        Validate results with auxiliary data from ROV, ice mass
balance buoys, and ice cores
·        Derive time series of sea ice porosity of different ice
types during MOSAiC, and interpret them with scientists from other
disciplines (e.g., biology and biogeochemistry).
·        Apply inversion to other sea ice data sets from the
Arctic and Antarctic to study, e.g., flooding or platelet ice

REQUIREMENTS
·        MSc in Geophysics or other physical discipline with
excellent grade
·        Experience with EM sounding desirable
·        Good programming and numerical knowledge
·        Good English language skills
