Dear colleagues,
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is looking to reach PhD
students to invite them
to apply to the ESO Studentship Programme, a unique career opportunity.
We would like to
ask you to share the following information with PhD students in your
institute who might be
interested in applying to the ESO Studentship programme in Germany or
Chile, currently
accepting applications.
ESO is organising a virtual guided tour of the ESO sites to facilitate
the interaction between
current ESO students in Chile and Germany and candidates interested in
applying to the
currently open programmes[1]. We invite you to attend the tour on 5
November 2020 at 14:00
CET/10:00 CLT to discover the sites and learn more about the life of
students at ESO, tips
for your application or simply to ask any other questions you might
have. To join the tour
head over to the ESO Astronomy Facebook Page[2] or YouTube channel[3].
You can also follow the #ESOstudentship[4] hashtag on Twitter for more
information about the programme.
We remind you that applications for the ESO Studenship in Germany and
Chile[5] are open until 30 November 2020.
We thank you in advance for helping us reach PhD students in
your organisation.
Best regards,
/Linda Schmidtobreick - for the Office for Science, ESO-Vitacura/

PHD POSITION ON “MULTI-WAVELENGTH OBSERVATIONS OF X-RAY BINARIES AS A
PROBE OF BINARY EVOLUTION”
(application deadline: November 16, 2020)
Applications are invited for a PhD position in high-energy astrophysics
at the Anton Pannekoek Institute
for Astronomy (API) of the University of Amsterdam to work with Dr.
Nathalie Degenaar. The research is
observationally oriented and focuses on accreting X-ray binaries. The
successful candidate will employ
observations obtained with various telescopes and satellites (e.g., the
Very Large Telescope, the Magellan
Telescopes, the Hubble Space Telescope, XMM-Newton, Chandra, Swift, NuSTAR)
to study key aspects
of known X-ray binaries such as their mass loss through disk winds and the
chemical composition of their
companion stars. Furthermore, this project will leverage large-scale
surveys at X-ray, optical, and radio
wavelengths to find new exotic binaries that harbour a neutron star or a
black hole.
The successful candidates must have a MSc degree (or equivalent) by the
PhD starting date, which is aimed
to be in Autumn 2021. The position is open to candidates from any country.
Motivated candidates are invited
to submit their application online via the UvA application website[6] on
or before November 16, 2020.
Applications should include a cover letter with a brief statement of
research interests and experience,
a curriculum vitae, a list of all university courses taken and grades
obtained, and contact details of two referees.
Promising applicants are invited for a presentation and interviews, which
will be held on February 18 and 19, 2021.
More information about the application procedure, our astronomy institute
and the university of Amsterdam can be
found at the application website.
Questions about the application procedure can be directed to Ms. Milena
Hoekstra at
mailto:api-phd-recruitment-science en uva.nl. Informal inquiries regarding
this particular PhD project are welcome and
can be sent to Dr. Nathalie Degenaar at mailto:degenaar en uva.nl.
