Hi guys:

the XXVIII Winter School in the Canary Islands will be dedicated this year
to the "Exploration of the Solar System". It is a great opportunity for
students to spend some quality time with the best researchers on the field,
to acquire specialized knowledge, in particular this year there is special
focus on missions. The school includes this year a workshop in data
acquisition and reduction and a visit the observatories in the Canaries,
with the 10.4m GTC telescope and some of the best Solar Telescopes.

If you could distribute this through your departments, specially for PhD
students and young post-docs it would be great.

Best Regards, Noemí

First Announcement of the XXVIII Canary Islands Winter School of
Astrophysics, this year devoted to "Solar System Exploration"
XXVIII IAC Winter School of Astrophysics on "Solar System Exploration",
November 7-16, 2016, Tenerife, Spain.

The Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics has been organized by
the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias
(http://www.iac.es/index.php?lang=en) every year since 1989.
The XXVIII IAC Winter School of Astrophysics will be held in the UNESCO
world heritage city of San Cristobal de La Laguna, Tenerife (Spain)
from November 7 to November 16, 2016.

The school is addressed to post-graduate students in Astrophysics
completing their PhD, and also to young post-docs. It is limited to 50
participants, and requires a registration fee of 950 EUR. The fee covers
attending the school plus shared accommodation in a double-room with
breakfast for the duration of the school. In addition, the fee covers
all social events and an excursion to Teide Observatory
(http://www.iac.es/eno.php?op1=3&lang=en).

The School will provide several advanced courses in the specific topics
described below, including two courses imparted by researchers of the
European Space Agency and focused on ESA planetary space missions.
Additionally, four virtual classes on planeatary space missions will be
imparted by experts from the Centre for Lunar and Asteroid Surface
Science (CLASS), part of the NASA Solar System Exploration Research
Virtual Institute (SSERVI). This year, and for the first time, the
School will also include a small workshop on planetary data reduction
and analysis, and it will put the focus on planetary data archiving.
This is especially interesting nowadays, when the amount of scientific
data from dedicated surveys and space missions is considerable large.

A number of leading experts in the subject will give lecture on the
following topics:

1 - Physical properties of asteroid surfaces by Dr. Karri Muinonen
(University of Helsinki, Germany)
2 - Origin and early evolution of the Solar System by Dr. Aurélien Crida
(Laboratoire Lagrange, Université Côte d'Azur, France)
3 - Exploring the outer Solar System by Dr. John Stansberry (Space
Telescope Science Institute - STSCI, EEUU)
4 - Planetary atmospheres by Dr. Sebastien Lebonnois (Laboratoire de
Meteorologie Dynamique, France)
5 - Cometary Science and the Rosetta mission by Dr. Michael Küppers
(European Space Astronomy Centre (ESA/ESAC), Spain)
6 - Planetary Science Archive (PSA) by Dr. Sebastien Besse (European
Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) Spain)
7 - ESA Missions to Mars and Venus by Dr. Alejandro Cardesín (European
Space Agency, Spain)

In order to maximize interactions, lecturers and students will stay in
the same hotel (http://www.hotelnivaria.com/). Special poster sessions
will be organized for the students that want to present their recent work.

Further information on the School can be found on the website:
http://www.iac.es/winterschool/2016/

Deadlines:

June 15th, 2016 Deadline for both the Registration and Applications.
