FIVE POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS IN HIGH-ENERGY ASTROPHYSICS
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GENEVA AND ETH ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

The Astronomy department of the University of Geneva has a strong
international reputation for research in several domains of astrophysics:
exoplanetary systems, stars formation & evolution, galaxies and the extreme
universe. The department is developing high-energy astrophysics
participating in several space/ground-based instruments and
modelling/interpreting high energy data in the multi-wavelength/messenger
context.

The Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics at ETH Zurich is made
of eleven research groups covering high-energy interactions between
fundamental particles, neutrino physics, astro-particle physics, precision
particle physics experiments at low energies, ion beam physics, cosmology
and structure formation, galaxy and black hole astrophysics and star and
planet formation.
Both institutes are involved in the construction of the Cherenkov
Telescope Array (CTA,  www.cta-observatory.org[36]), the most sensitive
very high-energy gamma-ray observatory, consisting of more than 100
telescopes placed in the northern and southern hemispheres.

Five project/post-doctoral research positions are opening (one in Zurich,
four in Geneva). The selected candidates will conduct research in fields
related to galactic or extragalactic X-ray and gamma-ray
astrophysics and/or participate in the development and commissioning of
CTA telescopes, especially in areas requiring software design and coding
skills (real time data handling, analysis of large data volumes, telescope
control).

The ideal candidates are expected to have a PhD in astronomy, physics or
computer science, a strong interest in performing research and data
analysis, expertise in software development (C++, Python) and high
performance computing. Experience with Cherenkov astronomy or telescope
operations is an advantage. As some of these positions are expected to
last for the duration of the construction and early operations of CTA,
young promising scientists are particularly welcome to apply.

Applications should be submitted by e-mail (a single pdf including CV,
motivation/recommandation letters) to Roland Walter
(roland.walter en unige.ch).

POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN EXOPLANET OBSERVATIONS (LINK[37]):

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position within the Swiss
research platform PlanetS to work on photometric observations of transiting
exoplanets. PlanetS (http://nccr-planets.ch/) is a Switzerland-wide
research network for planetary sciences with a large focus on exoplanets.
The available position is co-offered by the University of Geneva and the
University of Bern. It will be located primarily within the exoplanet team
at the University of Geneva, with a 6-month stay foreseen at the University
of Bern.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the follow-up of
long-period transiting planets detected by space-based surveys (TESS, K2)
and contribute to their interior modelling. He/She will participate in
ongoing observing programs of the Geneva exoplanet team, consisting of
radial-velocity (CORALIE, HARPS, NIRPS) and photometric (EulerCam, NGTS)
observations. He/she will be charged mainly with the analysis of
photometry, with a particular focus on the confirmation of long-period
giant planets, most importantly single-transit candidates. He/she is
expected to complete tasks including light curve modelling, target
selection, prioritisation and the joint analysis of photometric and RV
data. He/she will spend six months at the University of Bern to conduct the
interior modelling of long-period planets using the Bern planetary
evolution and structure models.

PlanetS presents a vibrant research environment with a wide range of
activities including theory, numerical simulations, observations and
instrumental developments related to exoplanets. The successful candidate
will have ample opportunity to collaborate within PlanetS, in particular
with regard to the CHEOPS space mission and projects related to the
characterisation of planetary atmospheres. The exoplanet team at the
University of Geneva is renown for its strong involvement in planet
detection, the determination of the planet physical properties, the
characterisation of planetary atmospheres, and the development of an
associated world-class instrumentation.

Applicants are expected to have completed a PhD in Astronomy or
Astrophysics or expect to complete it by the start of the position.
Applicants are also expected to have experience in observation, data
reduction and analysis, especially related to high-precision photometry.
Additional experience with either theoretical modelling of planetary
interiors or high-precision radial-velocities would be advantageous.

The duration of the appointment is initially for two years, with a possible
prolongation for a third year depending on performance and available
funding. This position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation
with a gross salary around 80,000 CHF a year. The position is available
immediately and to be started at latest on 1 May 2020. Interested
candidates should contact Dr. Monika Lendl at the University of Geneva.
Applications should be sent via email to monika.lendl en unige.ch and
contain (in a singe pdf file) 1) curriculum vitae, 2) list of publications,
3) a short research statement describing past achievements and future
projects (max. 2 pages) and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be
sent before 15 January 2020.

    Application Deadline:
   Wednesday, January 15, 2020

PHD POSITION IN EXOPLANET OBSERVATIONS (LINK[38]):

Applications are invited for a PhD position within the exoplanet team at
the University of Geneva to work on photometric observations of transiting
exoplanets. The main focus of the PhD thesis will be to study the density
of exoplanets by deriving their precise radii from light curve analysis of
NGTS, K2 and TESS surveys and complementary follow-up observations.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the follow-up
activities, and focus on retrieving the signatures of Super-Earth and
Neptune-like planets with high-precision photometry. While the PhD project
will be based on photometric observations, he/she will also participate in
ongoing high-precision RV follow-up using CORALIE, HARPS and NIRPS. The
successful candidate will be in charge to the transit modelling,
identification of false positives, ranking and vetting of transiting
candidates, coordination, execution and analysis of photometric
observations carried out with EulerCam at the 1.2 m Euler telescope at La
Silla observatory. He/She will also contribute to the activities of the
NGTS transit survey and to DACE platform tools related to light curve
analysis.

The Department of Astronomy of the University of Geneva offers a modern and
vibrant work environment, with a wide range of activities including theory,
numerical simulations, observations and instrumental developments in the
domains of exoplanets, stellar physics, galactic dynamics, observational
cosmology and high-energy astrophysics. The exoplanet team is especially
well renown, with strong involvement in planet detection, the determination
of the planet physical properties, the characterisation of planet
atmospheres, and the development of an associated world-class
instrumentation. We are also co-leading the Swiss-wide National Centre of
Competence in Research (NCCR) PlanetS (http://nccr-planets.ch/), dedicated
to the study of the origin, evolution, and characterisation of planets
inside and outside our Solar System. The applicant will also have the
opportunity to develop collaborations with members of PlanetS.

The applicant is required to have a Master in Astrophysics. Proficiency in
Python programming is considered as a plus. This four-year PhD position is
founded by Swiss National Science Foundation with a gross salary around
50,000 CHF a year. The position is available immediately and a rapid start
by the student would be appreciated. The University is actively seeking to
increase the numbers of women in physics and hence women are strongly
encouraged to apply. Interested applicants should send (in a single pdf
file) a curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, a motivation letter
including information on skills and previous experience, names of people
who can be contacted for a letter of recommendation, and the contact
details to Prof. François Bouchy, University of
Geneva, francois.bouchy en unige.ch, before 15th January 2020.
