Título: Supersoft X-ray Sources and Type Ia SNe

Resumen: Type Ia SNe are still our prime distance estimator for
cosmologically relevant distances. Large scale surveys are planned to
observe 1000s of them and build Hubble Diagrams with, essentially, no
statistical noise. However, lack of knowledge of their progenitors and,
hence, their systematic trends with redshift will cast doubts on
essentially any result, since systematic effects do mimic cosmology.

Supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) are a serious candidate SN Ia progenitor
and, if the link between them is finally established, a long lasting and
bothersome problem in astronomy will start to see a solution. However,
there are still many misteries regarding SSSs, chiefly among them, why
is it that we do not detect the highly ionized regions that are expected
to exist around them.

The lact of detection of the ionized regions robs SSSs science of an
important tool to study their physics and evolution and contributes to
delay establishing (or rejecting) them as a true SN Ia progenitor. We
will present observations obtained with Baade Telescope at Las Campanas
observatory using IMACS, using a specially designed O[III] narrow band
filter, in an attempt to detect the Stromgren spheres around a set of
SSSs and Type Ia SN renmants in the LMC (to test the hypothesis that
these ionized regions remain in a fosilized state for millenia after a
SN explosion).

We complement the study with theoretical modeling of the radiative
transfer around the SSSs to set constrains on the physical state and
characteristics of the circumstellar regions.
