Hoy el Dr Nicola Masetti ( INAF-IASF Bologna, Italia) dará una charla
invitada a las 14hs en el salón Meridiano.
Título:
Transitional Millisecond Binary Pulsars: a missing link
of X-ray binary evolution?
Resumen:
Generally, low-mass X-ray binaries containing an accreting millisecond
X-ray pulsar are transient sources, showing intense X-ray outbursts
lasting a few days, followed by long periods of quiescence of
duration of a few years.
However, a small number of transitional millisecond binary pulsars
(TMBPs) was recently discovered, in which the change from quiescence
to the active X-ray state (and vice versa) occurs in a completely
different fashion.
Here I will present the main observational characteristics of these
objects, the mechanisms driving their behaviour and their role in the
context of X-ray binary evolution.
