PhD Research Opportunity in Stellar Evolution and White Dwarf
Astrophysics

Location: Astronomy and Astrophysics Group (GAA),
Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC),
Barcelona, Spain

Supervisors: Leandro G. Althaus  y Pilar Gil-Pons

We invite expressions of interest from highly motivated students
wishing to pursue doctoral studies at UPC in the fields of stellar
astrophysics and compact stars.

The project will focus on one of the most intriguing discoveries of
the Gaia era: the unexpected accumulation of massive white dwarfs in
the so-called Q branch, which reveals a significant delay in their
cooling and challenges our current understanding of stellar
evolution. The student will combine observational data from Gaia and
other large surveys with theoretical modelling to investigate the
origin of this phenomenon and the evolutionary history of massive
white dwarfs.

The project will explore how different formation channels, including
single-star evolution and white dwarf mergers, contribute to the
observed population. Particular attention will be devoted to the
connection between advanced stellar evolution, nucleosynthesis, and
the properties of the resulting white dwarfs, establishing links
between progenitor stars and modern observations.

The research will be carried out within the Astronomy and Astrophysics
Group (GAA) at UPC, an internationally recognized research group with
expertise in stellar evolution, Galactic stellar populations, compact
objects, and the scientific exploitation of major astronomical surveys
such as Gaia. The student will work in a highly collaborative
environment combining theoretical modelling, numerical simulations,
and observational astronomy.

Candidates should hold, or expect to obtain before starting the PhD, a
degree in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a related discipline. A
strong interest in astrophysics, data analysis, and computational
methods is expected.
