*What is innovation in astronomy engagement?*
Innovation in science communication is often associated with technology:
algorithms, artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and new formats
designed for social media. While these tools can help us connect with
larger audiences, technology alone is not what creates meaningful
innovation.
Real innovation begins with ideas, and ideas come from people, communities,
lived experiences, and the different ways we understand and share
knowledge. Some of the most thoughtful and transformative science
communication projects emerge from small groups, local initiatives, and
communities deeply connected to their own realities.
Every region has its own challenges, histories, languages, and ways of
engaging with science. This is why listening to communities and valuing
locally developed methodologies is so important. When projects are built
from real experiences and from the knowledge already present within
communities, science communication becomes more collaborative, relevant,
and sustainable.
Innovation is not only about creating something new. Sometimes it is about
creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and able to contribute their
own perspectives and ideas. Many of the foundations for the future of
science communication already exist within communities around the world.
Recognizing and supporting them is also part of innovation.

The *Dark and Quiet Skies 2026*

campaign* is a global science communication and citizen engagement
initiative marking the *20th anniversary of Globe at Night*, one of the
world’s largest citizen-science programs monitoring light pollution.
In partnership with CPS and Globe at Night, the campaign will mobilise
communities worldwide to reconnect with the night sky through
*astrophotography,
storytelling, and citizen science* while raising awareness about the
scientific, environmental, cultural, and societal impacts of light
pollution.

*How close are we to finding worlds that could support life beyond our
Solar System?*
Join Dr. Mayuko Mori from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan
(NAOJ) for a conversation about exoplanets, the rapidly growing field of
astrobiology, and the next generation of telescopes that may help us
identify potentially habitable worlds in the decades to come.
From the discovery of thousands of planets orbiting distant stars to the
challenges of studying their atmospheres and environments, this talk will
explore how astronomers are searching for signs of life beyond Earth, and
what questions still remain unanswered.

cross-cultural connections and increase the understanding of indigenous

*Conference on Astronomy for Education 2026 conference *
This year's IAU OAE Conference on Astronomy for Education 2026 conference
picks up where the Shaw-IAU Workshops left off. This year's online workshop
will include a special science focus on radio astronomy in education and an
education focus on inclusive astronomy education for blind & visually
impaired students, Deaf & hard of hearing students, and students with
mobility issues.
This will be a fully online workshop with no in-person component.
