Dear Supporters of the International Day of Light,
We are delighted to share an update with you about the International Day
of Light 2025. Over 450 events and activities took place in more than 59
countries and worldwide, covering a range of themes including basic
science, photonics, lighting, astronomy, healthcare, energy, industry,
art, culture, education, and more. Based on the information provided by
the organisers, we estimate over 125,000 participants for targeted local
and national events, and many more for global events and campaigns. We
have prepared a summary infographic [1], which is also described below,
showing some key facts and figures. And if you haven’t looked already,
it is truly inspiring to survey the worldwide events calendar [2]. We
also describe a few of the many highlights below in this newsletter.
Planning will start soon for the International Day of Light in 2026, and
we look forward to working with you once again! Since 2018, the eight
years of success of the International Day of Light have seen more than
3000 events take place, reaching an audience of over a million. Thanks
to your commitment and support, many young people have been inspired to
discover more about science and its impact, and this will have a lasting
impact in the future. The actions by all our many committed volunteers
are at the heart of this success, and it is fitting that the year 2026
has been declared the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable
Development [3] by the United Nations General Assembly.
We look forward eagerly to next year's International Day of Light, and
we extend our most sincere thanks to you all once again!

International Day of Light Impact in 2025
The infographic above provides a concise summary of the facts and
figures associated with the 2025 edition of the International Day of
Light. Over 450 events took place in more than 59 countries and
worldwide, with an estimated 125,000 participants for targeted local and
national events, and many more for global events and campaigns. We are
also delighted to see the strong social media impact and the exceptional
work being carried out by volunteers around the world. Around 10% of our
events were activities in schools, which is wonderful to see, although
we are always seeking ways to increase the number of outreach actions to

Celebrating Light in Yerevan, Armenia
On May 16, 2025, light became a celebration, the laser turned 65, and
Armenian traditional music and culture became an inseparable part of the
festival of science. The doors of the Yerevan State University
Observatory were open for everyone, regardless of age or profession, to
celebrate the International Day of Light. The event was organised by the
Yerevan State University's SPIE and OPTICA joint Student Chapter (YSO
Student Chapter [6]). The goal of the event was to present the physical
nature of light, its applications, and its importance across various
fields.
During the first part of the event, optics experiments were
demonstrated, giving participants the chance to witness many fascinating
phenomena involving light and their real-world applications, such as in
optical illusions, telecommunication, art, and others. A quiz was held
with active audience participation, allowing attendees to test their
knowledge and win prizes.
During the second part, members of the _Vary Varenk_ and _Kharuyk_
organisations performed traditional Armenian dances and songs while
teaching the dance steps to the audience. The event successfully
combined scientific education with the preservation of cultural
heritage, creating an engaging and enriching atmosphere for attendees
from 5 to 85 years old.

International Day of Light in Indonesia
In the year 2014, two student chapters of the leading international
societies in optics and photonics, OPTICA and SPIE, were established in
the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) in Surabaya, Indonesia. Up
to now, they are the only student chapters in optics and photonics in
Indonesia. Since their establishment, the ITS Student Chapter OPTICA and
Student Chapter SPIE, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Photonics
Engineering, have been actively engaged in commemorating the anniversary
of the International Year of Light in 2015 and then the International
Day of Light annually from 2018. In 2025, we had the opportunity to
invite Sarun Sumriddetchkajorn, Ph.D., Fellow of OPTICA and SPIE, in the
frame of the OPTICA Travelling Lecturer Programme 2025. Dr. Sarun
delivered a lecture entitled Agriphotonics in Real Needs, and the
chapters carried out dissemination programmes to high school students,
as well as visiting the Panasonic Indonesia Manufacturing Facilities in
Pasuruan, East Java, to show the members of both chapters the production
stages where lamps are manufactured.

Optica Student Chapter at the Federal University of Paraná in Brazil
The OPTICA student chapter of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR)
in Brazil organised a number of events celebrating the International Day
of Light throughout the month of May. The diverse and engaging programme
included both in-person and online activities, including: (i) Seminars
on the history of optics, fiber optics technologies, quantum optics,
X-rays, and the role of light in education. These sessions were designed
to be inclusive and accessible to students from multiple backgrounds;
(ii) A poster session where undergraduate and graduate students
showcased their research in optics and photonics, fostering a
collaborative academic environment; (iii) Live-streamed webinars, now
available on the chapter YouTube channel [7], which have gathered over
268 views and continue to reach new audiences.
To reach out to the local community, the students organised hands-on
optics workshops for elementary and high school students. These
low-cost, interactive experiments help spark early interest in science
and make scientific knowledge more accessible to young learners from
diverse contexts. As part of their ongoing outreach work, the student
chapter also released a special edition of our original illustrated
comic series, _Tiras Ópticas_ (Optics Strips), which highlights
historical figures in optics and their contributions. The UFPR OPTICA
student chapter is committed to outreach and sharing creative and
educational content, and looks forward to continuing its actions
promoting light science and applications in 2026.

LUMENS at the Lycée Victor Bérard in Morez, France
To mark the International Day of Light on 16 May, first-year students of
the Brevet de Technicien Supérieur (BTS) programme in Optics and
Photonics at the Lycée Victor Bérard [10] organised a science
popularisation event, LUMENS, to introduce photonics to a broad
audience. LUMENS was held at the public community hall (Espace
Lamartine) in Morez with the programme including light painting, a
planetarium, laser tag, solar observations using telescopes, and many
other fun activities. Participants of all ages learned about the many
exciting properties of light and its many important applications, and
the students appreciated the power of using light as a means of
stimulating broad interest in science and technology.
About: The Victor-Bérard High School in Morez, located in the region of
the Jura, is renowned for its innovative approach to training in optics
and photonics in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The BTS Photonics programme
combines a scientific and industrial approach to understanding and
applying light phenomena. Students learn to use light for
telecommunications, measurements, material interaction, and imaging,
with complementary training in electronics, computing, and mechanical

International Day of Light at Kainat International School in India
Kainat International School (Kainat Nagar, Kako, Jehanabad, Bihar -
India) celebrated the International Day of Light 2025 with the theme
Hope for Humanity is Light – Conserve It. The day-long event aimed to
raise awareness about the critical role of light in science, culture,
education, and sustainable development, while promoting the values of
energy conservation and hope for a brighter future. The event was
inaugurated by Shakil Ahmed Kakvi, Founder Chairman, Kainat
International School, gracefully conducted by Guide Miss Tayaba Syeda,
and well-coordinated by the Kainat Quality Control Circle, under
leadership of Riya Kumai, Saloni Kumari, Muskan Kumari, and Shahzadi
Hasan, ensuring smooth execution of all scheduled activities. The Scouts
and Guides, along with active members of the Kainat Science Club, played
a commendable role in organising, supporting, and participating in the
event.
The celebration began with a special morning assembly where students
Sakib Mustafa, Rakib Mustafa, Yusuf Tarique, and teachers Belal Ahmad
Ansari, Shaan Mustafa, and Saheel T.P. shared powerful speeches on the
significance of light in daily life and its indispensable role in
various domains, from technology to spirituality. This was followed by
an enlightening address by Shakil Ahmed Kakvi, Founder Chairman, who
briefed the audience about the origin and importance of the
International Day of Light, and emphasised the implementation of quantum
light technologies. A fascinating timeline showcasing the evolution of
light sources—from the Stone Age to modern times—was creatively
mounted by the students Faisal Sarfraz, Huzaifa Salik, Muzammil Arshad,
Zain Abdeen and Yusuf Shamsheer, adding a visual dimension to the
celebration.
Engaging activities continued throughout the day: (i) Poster Making and
Slogan Writing Competitions were conducted for students of Classes 6 to
10, focusing on energy conservation and the symbolic power of light. The
posters of Zaid Khan, Sharib Anwer, and Owais Qarni were appreciated by
the judges. (ii) The Kainat Science Club organised an Exhibition on
Renewable Energy Sources and Solar Applications, showcasing innovative
student projects. Water mill by Prem Sagar, Solar system by Jahangeer
Khan, and wind mill by Ataur Rahman were recognised as rural categories'
best creative work. (iii) A session titled “Light and Life” engaged
primary students by Lamiya Kamal and Farzana Shakeel through
storytelling and creative activities, emphasising the importance of
sunlight in health, agriculture, and nature. (iv) Senior students
participated in a Science Quiz centered on optics, light technologies,
and conservation strategies, conducted by Sudheer Kumar. (v) A Hands-on
Mud Workshop on soil lamps, led by Sharique Ejaz and Modassir Mukhtaar,
empowered rural children with practical knowledge of sustainable energy
solutions under the guidance of Masroor Hasan and Mohd. Altamash.
The celebration concluded with a Pledge Ceremony, where students,
teachers, and guests vowed to conserve energy and promote awareness
within their communities. The Closing Ceremony was marked by the
lighting of traditional clay diyas on the International Day of Light
logo, symbolising enlightenment and sustainability. Certificates and
prizes were distributed to participants and winners, followed by a
candlelight dinner, reinforcing the event’s message of light, hope,
and harmony. The International Day of Light 2025 celebration at Kainat
International School was not only a tribute to scientific progress and
innovation but also a heartfelt call to action—for a more enlightened,
energy-conscious, and hopeful future.

Nominate your candidates for The Daylight Award 2026
The Daylight Award, the biennial prize honouring outstanding
contributions to daylight research and daylight in architecture, is open
for nominations for its 2026 edition. For the first time, the award is
presented by the Daylight Academy (DLA [12]), an international
membership organisation committed to promoting daylight knowledge and
fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among daylight experts
worldwide. Nominations for 2026 are open from 16 May 2025 until 15
September 2025
Nominations are welcome from individuals, organisations, architects,
researchers, and other professionals with expertise and interest in
daylight. Self-nominations are not accepted. Nominations should be sent
to office en daylight.academy. The jury will announce the 2026 laureates in
May 2026.
The Daylight Award celebrates both scientific research and architectural
practice, connecting disciplines that are often approached separately.
By encouraging this interdisciplinary exchange, the award aims to
strengthen the holistic understanding of daylight and increase its
positive impact on health, well-being, and society at large.
About The Daylight Award. Established by the philanthropic foundations
Villum Foundation, VELUX FOUNDATION, and Velux Stiftung, The Daylight
Award has been revitalised in 2016 with a focus on interdisciplinarity.

Liter of Light sets a further world record for solar lamp display
Liter of Light [15] is a Filipino-born social enterprise that advocates
for grassroots energy solutions that improve quality of life, address
climate change, and support local communities. Liter of Light has been
supporting the International Day of Light since its proclamation in
2018, and was also a major partner of the International Year of Light in
2015. One of Liter of Light's remarkable success stories has been the
worldwide implementation of inexpensive hand-built solar lights made
from readily-available materials, a simple technology that has proven to
be a powerful means to combat light poverty in rural communities. Each
hand-built solar light can reduce carbon emissions by replacing
traditional forms of electricity, mainly kerosene, with clean,
sustainable energy.
Thanks to Liter of Light, the Philippines has earned a new _Guinness
World Record_ for the largest display of solar-powered lamps, which was
achieved on 30 June 2025 at the Liwasang Rizal in Manila. This is the
first world record of its kind in the country, and follows on from a
previous world record-setting display by Liter of Light in Dubai in
2024. The installation featured 3,500 solar lamps which were hand-built
by women-led cooperatives using traditional ceramic techniques. They
will be donated to underserved communities after an exhibition at the
National Museum of the Philippines.
The record display was a collaboration between a number of partners. The
_Circle of Light_ initiative, led by _Sun Life Philippines_ in
partnership with Liter of Light, the _National Museum of the
Philippines_, and _Odangputik Art Space_. Community-based groups worked
alongside volunteers from the Department of Science and Technology,
Rotary International, the Firefly Brigade, the Asian Institute of
Management, the Philippine Coast Guard, Youth for Dagat, and students
from Metro Manila universities.
