IAU President

Dear Members,

It's been over six months since my last message, and I felt it was time to
get in touch again.

Over the past few years, we have achieved remarkable things by working
together and respecting our differences. We have realised that these
differences are actually valuable assets that help us to achieve more
together than we could on our own. The IAU remains committed to these
values and will continue to foster an inclusive environment where everyone
feels welcome and valued. We believe this is the right thing to do, as well
as being the best way to advance science.

I don’t want to be too long so I’ve only selected a few items you may wish
to take note of.

(1) IAU Fundraising

The IAU is now fully engaged in fundraising, aiming to increase our income
to a level that will enable us to realise our ambitions regarding the
benefits of astronomy for science and society. Since November, Genevieve
Marshall has been helping us to identify suitable funding sources and build
relationships with this important group of potential supporters. It will
take some time to reach our goal, but the initial signs are encouraging,
with a diverse range of funders showing interest in our mission. If you
would like to support us, for example by helping us with introductions to
foundations or philanthropists you might know, please contact us at

(2) IAU Regional meetings

The IAU is a unique global organisation that concerns itself with astronomy
worldwide. Regional meetings provide a valuable opportunity to network with
colleagues and present our scientific work. They also provide an excellent
way to demonstrate the diversity of activities organised by or taking place
within our community. Furthermore, they highlight that we are a force to be
reckoned with when it comes to astronomy and its use for the betterment of
society.

Within the next 12 months, there will be two IAU regional meetings:

The
deadline is 1 October 2025.

We are pleased to invite the IAU community to submit nominations for the
2026 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics – which awards a $1 million prize for
basic research breakthroughs that have fundamentally transformed our
field.

The prize honours scientists for outstanding achievements in advancing our
knowledge and understanding of the origin, evolution, and properties of the
universe, including the fields of cosmology, astrophysics, astronomy,
planetary science, solar physics, space science, astrobiology, astronomical
and astrophysical instrumentation, and particle astrophysics. Nominations
are open to everyone but self-nominations are not accepted.

Nominations are reviewed by Selection Committees appointed by The Norwegian
Academy of Science and Letters, comprising experts put forth by leading
international academies and other equivalent scientific organisations.

(4) Farewell to Lina Canas

Many of you will know Lina Canas, our Membership Coordinator. Recently, she
expressed her desire to take up a new, exciting position in her home
country of Portugal. Lina has had a long career within the IAU. She was
Director of our Office for Astronomy Outreach in Tokyo for several years,
before joining the Paris central office as Membership Coordinator two years
ago. She has done marvellous work for the IAU, and we wish her all the best
in her new endeavour.
