*Strongest Solar Flare of 2025*

On 11 November, a powerful X5.1-class solar flare, the strongest this year,
was observed, with a peak around 10:04 UTC. Following the flare, shock
waves were observed on the solar surface radiating away from the active
region. This was followed less than an hour later with the observation of a
coronal mass ejection (CME) by SOHO’s LASCO and GOES-19’s CCOR-1
coronagraphs. This video was taken by SOHO’s LASCO instrument, a
coronagraph made up of a telescope with a disc blocking out the direct
light coming from the Sun, enabling it to see light from the surrounding
corona. Read more *here

*COSPAR Heliophysics Guidelines Released*
The COSPAR Heliophysics Guidelines were officially released on 4 November
during the 6th COSPAR Symposium. Heliophysics, the study of the Sun and its
effects throughout the solar system, is an umbrella term that unifies solar
physics, space physics, and aeronomy into a new scientific domain. It is
cross-disciplinary, international and involves a wide array of space- and
ground-based assets that can be combined, with theory and modeling efforts,
into holistic studies of the systems that comprise Heliophysics. The
Heliophysics Guidelines, an initiative of the COSPAR Task Group on
Establishing an International Geospace Systems Program (TGIGSP), codifies
the definitions of Heliophysics and its associated applied branch of space
weather while outlining a set of principles by which the international
community can come together. Read the Heliophysics Guidelines

*Milestones, Major Research Findings & More at COSPAR 2025*
COSPAR 2025 has just finished and once more our Symposium was a welcome
platform for dialogue without borders and international collaboration in
space research. Participants followed the space agency leaders' roundtable
with interest, the keynote talks by Dan Baker (Chair of the Panel on
Establishing a Constellation of Small Satellites PCSS) and COSPAR General
Counsel Niklas Hedman sparked many interactions, and the Roadmap on Space
Exploration was launched. Read the press release here

early careers in today’s global job market, and looked at how science
education can be applied in the industry marketplace. The panel discussion
ended with a mentoring session, initiated by Bernard Foing (PEX and SC B
Vice-Chair), and pairing several early career researchers with more
experienced COSPAR Associates.

*1st Generation of Stars Found?*

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) may have already found the
long-sought first generation of stars born shortly after the Big
Bang. These initial stars, referred to as Population III or POP III stars,
dwell in a galaxy called LAP1-B, previously studied by the JWST. The light
from this galaxy has been travelling for 13 billion years to reach the
telescope.

*3I/Atlas Visible*

A team of astronomers has taken the sharpest-ever picture of the unexpected
interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, using the crisp vision of the NASA/ESA Hubble
Space Telescope (see below). It is the third known object originating from
outside our solar system discovered, after 1I/Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov.
Traveling at approximately 250,000 km/h at its closest approach to the Sun
(the highest ever recorded for a Solar System visitor), it is extremely
rare and offers clues about the formation of worlds outside our solar
system.
