Dear Supporters of the International Day of Light,
We are counting down the days to May 16, 2025, which will see the eighth
celebration of the UNESCO International Day of Light, one of the most
anticipated science events on the global calendar of United Nations
observances. Since its inception in 2018, over 2800 activities and
events have taken place in more than 100 countries, reaching and
inspiring millions worldwide. We would like to thank you all for the
hard work that has made the International Day of Light such a success.
As you will see from our global calendar [1], activities are being
organised worldwide for 2025, and we look forward to some fantastic
celebrations. Indeed, some have already taken place! One of the unique
features of the International Day of Light is the way it brings together
so many diverse communities, and this is reflected in the tremendous
range of topics that will be celebrated - science and technology,
lighting and lighting quality, astronomy, education and more! In
addition, 16 May is also the United Nations International Day of Living
Together in Peace [2], and we encourage organisers of events on 16 May
to consider including broader discussions of this theme as well, perhaps
linking with the cultural association of light as a symbol of inclusion
and hope.
If you haven’t planned any activities yet, remember that the
International Day of Light celebrations do not all need to take place on
the 16 May itself. While many will naturally be organised around that
date and during the week that follows, events at any time of the year
can receive International Day of Light association. Please register [3]
your events as soon as you can, and remember that we have simplified our
registration form in case you are organising multiple events. As usual,
the website contains useful information about all aspects of event
organisation. [4] Also feel free to review past events [5] for
inspiration as well. Many people find this extremely useful as a way to
get started.
And we appreciate just how much work and commitment goes into organising
such events, so don't hesitate to let us know if you wish us to
highlight your plans via our newsletter. This can be a great way to give
you some well-deserved recognition! And if you may be involved in
organising a technical or science-themed conference this year, why not
think about including a special session related to outreach, education
or training? Our experience is that such sessions are very
enthusiastically attended, and provide a great forum for meeting new
collaborators.
We encourage you all to continue following and engaging with our social

CIE Webinar: How does light affect human health? From biology to
application.
The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) is celebrating the
International Day of Light on 16 May 2025 with an exclusive CIE webinar
exploring the vital connections between light and human health. Titled
How does light affect human health? From biology to application, the
webinar will be presented by Prof. Dr. Manuel Spitschan, Professor of
Chronobiology & Health at the Technical University of Munich & Max
Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. Dr. Jennifer Veitch, CIE
President, will open the webinar with an introduction to the CIE, an
overview of the new CIE project _"Understanding Science - Understanding
Light"_, and a welcome to our speaker.

May 16th also marks the launch of the Ladenburg Initiative
communications campaign [14], a collaborative effort to translate

policy. Coordinated by Prof. Dr. Manuel Spitschan, the initiative brings
together key organisations, including the International Commission on
Illumination (CIE), Society for Light, Rhythms and Circadian Health
(SLRCH formerly SLTBR), the Daylight Academy (DLA), the Good Light
Group, and the Center for Environmental Therapeutics.

Unite to Light - Celebrating Impact in Honduras
Unite to Light is a Santa Barbara based not-for-profit organisation [15]
that manufactures and distributes efficient, durable, low-cost solar
lamps and solar chargers to people living without electricity. In
celebration of the International Day of Light 2025, Unite to Light will
host a virtual webinar to share findings from a recent research project
in Honduras. This study set out to understand the real-life impact of
solar lights following the distribution of 200 lights to individuals in
two different but equally underserved communities.
The webinar will feature firsthand stories illustrating how access to
light is creating opportunities—from improved education and safety to
economic empowerment and stronger communities. Community Healthcare
Partners Honduras will join to share on-the-ground experiences and
outcomes. Additionally, the event will highlight a new collaborative
initiative between Unite to Light and Community Healthcare Partners
Honduras.

The African Astronomical Society promoting and advancing astronomy
within the continent
The African Astronomical Society (AfAS) [17] is a Pan-African
professional society of astronomers whose vision is to build and support
a globally competitive and collaborative astronomy community in Africa
with the primary aim of becoming a voice of astronomy in the continent
through the promotion and advancement of astronomy while contributing to
addressing the challenges faced by the continent. Amongst its many
actions, the science committee awards seed grants and prizes to enable
astronomy projects by postgraduates and early career researchers, as
well as supports the Pan-African and regional astronomy schools in
providing competitive skills to young and emerging astronomers. With
skills that match the astronomy work environment, the formation of an
integrated system of observatories across the continent makes it easier
to consolidate scientific opportunities, share telescope access,
organise exchange programs, and coordinate outreach and capacity
building.
The outreach and education committee is dedicated to advancing inclusive
astronomy outreach, education, skills development, and relatable role
modeling. The committee has initiated a series of impactful initiatives,
like the cascade outreach project, the AfricaLookUp campaign, and the
Astronomy2024 Legacy Project to inspire future generations of
astronomers. With the absence of an astronomy footprint in some African
countries, the Global Outreach Projects integrates astronomy information
into the curricula of science and thereafter raises awareness. These
initiatives tackle engagement in different ways: the cascade outreach
model supports the training and empowerment of astronomy ambassadors to
deliver hands-on activities within their local communities; the
#AfricaLookUp campaign encourages night sky appreciation through
storytelling, music, dance, and sparking curiosity; the #Astronomy2024
Legacy Project builds on the momentum of the IAU General Assembly by
equipping schools with digital tools, establishing sustainable outreach
and mentorship programs in collaboration with science centres, education
departments, and ambassadors. The committee also facilitates the
distribution of astronomy resources through strategic partnerships with
organisations like Astronomy for Equity, Astronomers Without Borders,
BRICS Astronomy and the Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive
Astronomy (IDIA).
These efforts celebrate Africa’s scientific potential, strengthen STEM
education, and inspire a new generation of astronomers and science
champions.

We are now welcoming registrations [18] for 2025 International Day of
Light events on our global calendar. Please note that events can be
registered no matter when they will take place during 2025, and we have
simplified our registration form in case you are organising multiple
events under a common banner. If you cannot access the online
registration page from your location, please use the downloadable
registration form [19] instead, and email this to us at

This year we are encouraging activities structured around the special
theme of Light, Innovation, Society. When planning for 2025, please
think about how these topics can be worked into any events that you are
organising.
Turkish National Committee for Illumination Activities
The Turkish National Committee for Illumination conducts a year-long
series of activities relating to all aspects of light, light science,
and applications. For the International Day of Light 2025, in addition
to its regular invitation to its members to share their photos using the
hashtags #ISIKGUNU2025 #IDL2025, the committee is also organising a
series of training events
Special Topic Indoor Lighting Training Seminar 2025-1._ _Between April 8
and April 17, 2025, this dedicated training seminar will be conducted by
academics and industry experts working in the field of lighting.
Participants will prepare an indoor lighting project and presentation
based on a sample space.
Seminar on Lighting Design for Building Facades._ _On Monday, April 21,
2025, at 20:30 Istanbul local time, the President of the National
Committee Board of Directors Prof. Dr. F. Rengin Ünver, will give a
webinar organised by the Istanbul Chamber of Electrical Engineers with a
presentation titled _Lighting Design for Building Facades._
17th Fundamental Training in Lighting Seminar 2025._ _The 17th Basic
Lighting seminar will be held on an online platform from May 5 to May
15, 2025.Current technical and design-related information on fundamental
principles and concepts, as well as topics such as light sources, LEDs,
indoor and outdoor lighting, lighting calculations are provided by
expert trainers in the field. Information about the seminar can be found

International Day of Light events in Salamanca, Spain
The Centro de Láseres Pulsados [21] (CLPU) is organising the main
events for the 2025 International Day of Light in Salamanca, with a
diverse program offering various activities open to the public.
From May 9 to 15, the Cycle of Light will take place, a series of
outreach conferences where five researchers will explore the role of
light in different disciplines. Until April 30, the Instagram contest -
The Light of Your City, sponsored by the Spanish Lighting Committee,
will be open, inviting participants to capture images showcasing the
impact of light in urban spaces.
The visual arts will also have their space with several exhibitions.
Canvases of Light and Shadow will showcase works by artists from
Castilla y León that highlight the use of light in painting. Shadows in
Light will be an urban exhibition honoring outstanding female scientists
throughout history through infographics. Meanwhile, Garabalux will
feature children's drawings selected from primary school students.
Finally, Bit Bus will transform bus shelters into an urban exhibition
illustrating basic concepts of optics and photonics, bringing science
closer to everyday life.
The closing event will take place on May 16 featuring Ramón Vilaseca's
lecture Photonics: The Light that Drives Science and Technology,
followed by a dance performance by the Entrepasos school, choreographed
by Luca Vetere.

Resources and Images for International Day of Light events
A question we are often asked concerns the availability of textual and
visual material that you can use in planning your events. Firstly,
please note that all content on the International Day of Light website
is provided under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 [23] International
License. Essentially this means that unless otherwise stated, you are
free to use the textual material on the website and build upon the
material for any purpose. This applies for example to all the
descriptive text [24] relating to the goals of the year, links to
sustainable development, education, and technology etc. The use of
images is more complex, however, and varies greatly from one country to
another. But we do provide links to partner sites with light-related
images, although the conditions of use of particular images varies. In
some cases such as the SPIE banners [25], images can be freely
downloaded, but in other cases it may be necessary to contact the
partner site or to check with the copyright holder (whose name usually
appears under the images). We cannot provide permission ourselves for
image use from partners, but we are happy to help with advice.
Society of Light and Lighting - Illuminating the Future
With over 3300 members globally, the Society of Light and Lighting [26]
welcomes all who are interested in any aspect of the world of light,
lighting, and its design or application. Lighting designers, consulting
engineers, researchers, students, academics, manufacturers, and many
more all contribute to the activities of the society. For the
International Day of Light 2025, the Society of Light and Lighting
hosted a thought-provoking conference on 25 March 2025 in London, around
the theme of Illuminating the Future: Balancing Light and Dark
Nightscapes. [27] Thanks to Helen Loomes (SLL Past President) and the
task group, an excellent programme featured experts from various fields,
including environmental science, urban planning, criminology, and social
psychology, offering a balanced examination of the pros and cons of
artificial light after dark.
The key topics of discussion were:
* Impact on Nocturnal Species
* Crime Reduction and Public Safety
* Social Interaction and Community Well-being and
* Design Considerations for Women
Speakers included:
* Dan Lister, Helen Loomes, Steve Fotios, Michael Wells, Benz Roos,
Mike Simpson, Jim Uttley, Don Slater, Elettra Bordonaro, Peter Raynham,
Ruth Kelly Waskett, Alistair Scott, Ryan Carroll, Andrew Bissell, Chiara
Carucci and Florence Lam
The conference was sponsored by: DW Windsor, Urbis Schréder, we-ef and
LUG with partners: The Academy of Urbanism, The ILP and The LIA. A
