Subject: A Personal Appeal for Participation in the First IAU General
Assembly in Africa
Dear IAU National Members,
Please read below a personal appeal for participation in our first IAU
General Assembly in Africa from Kevin Govender, the Chair of the National
Organization Committee and the Director of the IAU Office of Astronomy for
Development. We would deeply appreciate it if you could encourage your
community to join us in this historical event and share the latest
important news of our General Assembly (you can find the IAU GA 2024
Newsletter latest issue here: https://mailchi.mp/astronomy2024/africaday).
Thank you for your consideration.
With our best regards,
*Lina CanasIAU Membership Coordinator*
____________
Dear friends,
As we approach the next significant milestone towards the first IAU General
Assembly in Africa (i.e. normal registration and payment deadline of 31st
May), I would like to make a special appeal to you and your colleagues to
be part of this event either in person or online.
We believe we have built the foundations needed for a meaningful,
rewarding, memorable conference experience (both in person and online) that
will make it worth it for both you and your organisation to be part of the
IAU General Assembly - ranging from innovative scientific networking in a
hybrid environment to social and side events to opportunities for cultural
and artistic engagement, as well as societal impact, both implicit in the
local businesses involved and explicit in the many outreach/engagement
opportunities across the continent.
However, we are also seeing ever more clearly the stark inequalities that
exist in our global community and which inevitably influence events such as
this. Over the last two months, we have been processing hundreds of grant
applications from across the world (especially the African continent) from
astronomers and students wanting to participate - a record number by any
standard. It has been heartbreaking to issue grant outcomes in an
environment where the demand so significantly exceeds the available
funding. As we continue to seek alternative ways to support grant
applicants, we again appeal to you to register (either online or in person)
- because the reality remains that the more paid registrations we receive
from those who can afford it, the more support we can provide to those who
cannot.
We have taken principled decisions to increase accessibility through a
hybrid, open-access, family-friendly event whilst ensuring maximum impact
on society (like no such event has done before). However, we rely on the
paying delegates to help us realise the full potential of the meeting. I am
confident that your participation will be worth the investment, either in
person or online. Complete your registration and payment at
www.astronomy2024.org and help us set an example for future truly global
astronomy meetings.
Regards,
