News about the International Day of Light 16 May 2024

*Dear Supporters of the International Day of Light,*

Welcome to our first newsletter of the year with updates for
the International Day of Light 2024. We are already receiving regular
information about exciting events planned for next year, and we are
welcoming registrations
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=8c87901a57&e=773971c1ea>
on
our global calendar. In the newsletter below, we give a range of updates as
we begin to look forward to 2024. We hope you will enjoy reading about the
various activities that are being planned.

With the theme for 2024 covering the very broad topic of *Light in Our
Lives*, we can naturally highlight many different areas of science, art and
culture, architecture, and more. Also, remember that we can recognise
events throughout the year promoting the goals of the International Day of
Light and so events need not be limited only to the 16 May. In this regard,
note that on *Monday, April 8, 2024*, a *total solar eclipse* will cross
North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Total
eclipses are remarkable and rare events and if you live in these regions,
you may wish to advance any International Day of Light celebration to
coincide. You can click on this convenient map

to
find the time of the eclipse in your location. Please register any event or
viewing activity

and
see below for more details, including a link to safety information.

Also, remember that we have simplified our registration form in case you
are organising multiple events. As usual, the website contains useful
information about all aspects of event organisation.

And
remember that we understand that organisations may have their own activity
timetable for education, outreach, and awards, and we are always happy to
link these events to the International Day of Light whenever they occur in
the year. You can register them yourselves or get in touch with us below.

We encourage you all to continue following and engaging with our social
media channels using the hashtag #lightday2024 and the official channels: @

*CIE publishes Research Strategy 2023-2027*

The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) is a technical,
scientific, and cultural non-profit organisation that provides a forum
for the discussion of all matters relating to science, technology, and art
in the fields of light and lighting. It supports the exchange of
information in these fields between countries and with other international
organisations. As a standardisation body, CIE develops guidance and
standards in the field of light and lighting alongside its partners ISO or
the IEC. The CIE was established in 1913 and for over a century has been at
the heart of international science and applications of light and lighting,
with over 1000 volunteer experts contributing to CIE committees to support
its objectives and publications.

In 2023, the CIE published a fully updated Re

which outlines a global agenda for research in light and lighting on topics
that need further study. The strategy is explicitly linked to the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals, structured around overarching themes
of diversity, equity, and inclusion; and the development of advanced
digital tools for information and knowledge sharing. Topical themes of the
Strategy are Advances in Measurement & Calibration; Integrative lighting
for people; Ecologically respectful, high-quality exterior
lighting; Fundamentals of photobiology for agriculture and aquaculture;
Enabling the application of safe & beneficial optical radiation; Measuring,
modelling, perceiving, and reproducing colour. CIE supports research
funding applications aligned with its scope and priorities. Letters of
support are granted for relevant research contributing to CIE's ongoing
work.

Every second year since 2004, the VELUX Group has been fostering innovation
in architecture through the International VELUX Award for students of
Architecture. The competition seeks to challenge students to explore the
role of daylight in architecture and inspire new thinking. The award aims
to engage with students of architecture about how to use sunlight and
daylight as main sources of energy and light and how to ensure the health
and well-being of the people who live and work in buildings. Since the
launch, it has grown into the largest competition of its kind with students
from 800 schools, from 130 countries of all continents, submitting more
than 6,000 projects on the award theme “Light of Tomorrow”. Read more about
the award on the Daylight and Architecture website.

*Fitzpatrick Institute of Photonics Symposium 2024*

The Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics (FIP) at Duke University regularly
organises major international symposia and outreach events in support of
the International Day of Light. For 2024, the FIP Symposium will be held
on 13 April, and this year will be even more special than usual because
2024 is the centennial of Duke University. Duke University counts many
prominent figures amongst its alumni, including Charles Townes, one of the
founders of the field of quantum electronics and Nobel laureate in 1964 for
the maser-laser principle. Charles Townes began his career in research with
a Masters project at Duke!

The program will feature three distinctive events throughout the day:
(i) *Centennial
Symposium on Light in Service of Society: *a special continuous video loop
featuring ‘Lightning Talks’ presenting FIP faculty’s groundbreaking
research accomplishments in photonics; (ii) *Exploring The Wonder of
Light* exposition
booths from the Duke Optical Student Chapter (DOSC) demonstrating Lasers,
Lenses & Light; and (iii) *Moving Forward at The Speed of Light through
Space & Time;* a session on Light Painting dedicated to creating art
inspired by the leaders of Duke’s past, present, and future.

The event will be open to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the
public. More details are coming soon and you can keep up to date here.

About the Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics: The Fitzpatrick Institute
for Photonics is an interdisciplinary Duke University-wide effort to
advance photonics and optical sciences. Founded in 2000, the institute's
mission is to provide an outstanding educational and research environment
to train scientists, engineers, and graduates with the knowledge and skills
to transform and profoundly impact academic and industrial R&D in photonics
and optical science. FIP faculty perform cross-disciplinary research in
many areas and teach undergraduates, master's, and doctoral students, and
foster the skill set that enables our protégés to thrive in their chosen
professions. More general information is here

*Start planning for #lightday2024 now!*
It is never too early to start thinking about and planning an event for the
International Day of Light in 2024. Remember that speakers are often in
high demand during May for international conferences, and it's best to give
them as much advance notice as possible - even if you are asking for online
participation. Planning early also gives you the opportunity to contact
local sources of financial support (e.g. your school, university, or
institute) and to make contact with other partners such as those on the
International Day of Light Steering Committee. Remember to check out our
resources

and to let us know of anything you may be planning.

*Total Solar Eclipse on 8 April 2024*

Monday, April 8 2024 will see a total solar eclipse crossing North America,
passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The eclipse will begin
over the South Pacific Ocean and the first location in continental North
America that will experience totality is Mexico’s Pacific coast at around
11.07 Pacific Daylight Time. Solar eclipses are remarkable and rare
phenomena, and with the theme for IDL 2024 covering the very broad
topic of *Light
in Our Lives*, if you live in the areas that will experience the eclipse,
why not organise a viewing in collaboration with local groups and schools.

You can click on this convenient map

to
find the time of the eclipse in your location. Of course, please make sure
to take all precautions to protect your eyes

use only approved eclipse viewing glasses or view in some other safe way
such as projection. Please remember to register any event or viewing

viewing events, and through online streaming, the eclipse will be able to
be followed worldwide.
