Asabre-Frimpong (Ghana) and Cintia Durán (Mexico). They are two brilliant
women in science communication, and we are very lucky to have them as part

*Meet the new OAO Team!*
The OAO is thrilled to announce that we will soon be joined by two
exceptional new employees who bring their passion, experience, and
innovation to our shared vision: astronomy for everyone, everywhere. Read
below to meet the new members of our team!
*Naomi Asabre Frimpong – Deputy Director*
Naomi Asabre Frimpong is an astrophysicist, science communicator, and
leader in African astronomy. Based at the Ghana Space Science and
Technology Institute (GSSTI), Naomi’s work is advancing not only the field
of astronomy but also the growth of scientific communities across Africa.
As the Vice President of the African Astronomical Society, she champions
the development of astronomy across the continent. As the Science
Communication and Outreach Manager at GSSTI, Naomi is dedicated to
empowering the next generation of African scientists—especially young
girls—through mentorship and outreach programs. Deeply embedded in the IAU
community, Naomi is an Executive of the Promoting Radio Astronomy in Ghana
through School visits and Astronomy Clubs, a programme supported by the IAU
Office of Astronomy for Development, and a Co-NOC for Ghana under the
auspices of the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach.
*Cintia Durán – International Outreach Officer*
Cintia Durán brings a unique and interdisciplinary approach to astronomy
outreach. A multimedia artist, educator, and innovator, she has spent her
career blending science, art, technology, and education. Cintia’s work
focuses on the intersection of planetary science, language, and sound,
particularly in communicating complex scientific ideas and our place in the
universe. Most recently, Cintia was announced as the NOC for Mexico at the
beginning of this triennium. However, Cintia has led many science
communication projects over the course of her career. These include serving
as Director of Tlaloque – an experimental science communication platform
that uses language to promote science through community – the Co-Founder of
Generador – a network for education and research in technology and
contemporary art – a member of the Organising Committee at HackerGarage – a
citizen experimental technology lab – and the Educational Coordinator of
Bibliotecas del Espacio – an educational platform dedicated to astronomy
and planetary sciences.
*1) IAU Symposium Indigenous Astronomy in the Space Age

The IAU Symposium IAUS399 on “Indigenous Astronomy in the Space Age” will
be held from July 7 to 11, 2025, in Melbourne, Australia. The Symposium
aims to address three questions (text from the Symposium website):
*(1) How can the astronomical and space communities support Indigenous
Knowledge, engage collaboratively with First Nations communities, and pave
a future for the next generation of Indigenous astronomers? (2) How can we
safeguard astronomical knowledge and heritage while establishing roadmaps
and guidelines for humanity’s future in space? (3) How are Indigenous
astronomies, ground-based observatories, humanity's expansion into space,
and the relationships between them juxtaposed in our future vision as we
progress through the Space Age?*
Here are some important dates to keep in mind:

The US National Science Foundation-funded project, Global Network for
Accelerating Synergies Through Research On Astronomy in Culture,
Communication, Education & Learning (ASTRO ACCEL), seeks a consultant to
assist with the project’s management. The OAO and several other IAU
Offices, Commissions, and Working Groups are members of this network of
networks; this is a great opportunity to be involved with the IAU and other
organisations!
*3) Read Issue 11 of IAU Catalyst

Issue 11 of the IAU Catalyst is a special edition dedicated to the XXXII
IAU General Assembly, which took place at the Cape Town International
Convention Centre and online from 6-15 August 2024. In this edition, we
offer an insight into what the IAU community can expect from a General
Assembly, as well as a 'sneak peek' of the next meeting in 2027.

The IAU Professional-Amateur Working Group (Pro-Am WG) has launched the IAU
Pro-Am Research Collaboration (PARC), an initiative that promotes and
facilitates professional-amateur research collaborations in astronomy. PARC
aims to enhance professional astronomy research capacity through
collaboration with amateur astronomers.

*6) Updates from the IAU National Outreach Coordinators (NOCs)*
At the end of each quarter, the NOCs report on their activities over the
previous three months. From Haiti to Mozambique to Japan, our NOCs have
been very busy engaging their communities in our projects and programmes.

The NOC Guatemala team led members of their community on an expedition to
see Saturn hide behind the moon. On a rooftop with food and drink, all
enjoyed the spectacle and their shared passion for the Universe.

Registrations are open for the 1st Asian Regional Shaw-IAU Workshop on
Astronomy Education to be held in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal from December
19-21, 2024.
Organised by OAE Nepal and hosted by the Nepal Astronomical Society - NASO,
this workshop will focus on advancing astronomy education in low-tech
environments, particularly within the SAARC region. Applications are
invited from National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAECs), pre-service
and in-service teachers, and educators from the SAARC and ASEAN regions.

NGC 602 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) galaxy. In this episode of
