*Dear Supporters of the International Day of Light,*
The end of 2023 is approaching rapidly, and this is the ideal time to
provide you all with a quick update about the International Day of Light
2024 (IDL 2024).
Of course, we are still celebrating the wonderful success of IDL 2023,
including the inspiring message

from the Director-General of UNESCO, and the 400 events that took place
worldwide. There were 550,000 participants at global events and large
festivals and 60,000 participants at local and national events. Our summary

all the key facts and figures. You might also be interested in a summary of
key information for all six years of International Day of Light
celebrations. This information was collated for a recent meeting of
partners at the World of Photonics Congress in Munich, and this is
described in an item below.
We are also delighted to report on some exciting developments for 2024,
including the announcement of the VELUX award for students of architecture,
the announcement of a United Nations International Decade on Sciences for
Sustainable Development, as well as the selection of the theme for the
International Day of Light in 2024 - *Light in Our Lives.*
And remember, as you plan for 2024, there is a wealth of resources and
information over six editions of IDL that we can draw on. We archive

*IDL Theme for 2024 - Light in Our Lives*
The objectives of the International Day of Light are very broad, raising
awareness of the applications of light science and technology in society
and in sustainable development, and promoting science education through the
highly accessible subject of light. Every year, we see a wide range of
actions take place that span all of these areas, from high-level panels, to
activities in schools, to large light festivals. From time to time, we
also promote a particular focus for the International Day of Light, and
this year we will be encouraging activities structured around the
particular theme of *Light in Our Lives.*
There are of course many potential areas of awareness-raising and
activities associated with this theme, such as: the beautiful effects of
light and colour in nature; the ways in which new technologies in lighting
enhance our daily lives; the ways in which natural daylight enhances design
and architecture; how the science of light brings life-changing advances in
healthcare; the ways in which light pollution impacts our appreciation of
the night sky; how our lives are enriched by telescope images of the
universe; the ways in which metaphors of light are used in art and
culture. And there are many more!
So when planning for 2024, please think about how these various
topics might be worked into any events you are organising, e.g. through
choices of speakers for a conference, questions for a panel discussion, or
an overarching theme if you are organising a photo competition. Our coming
newsletters will include even more ideas!

*International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development 2024-2033 *
After designating 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences for
Sustainable Development, the United Nations General Assembly has now
proclaimed the decade from 2024 to 2033 as *the International Decade of
Science for Sustainable Development. *This is a tremendous recognition of
how science is an essential component of work to achieve the UN Sustainable
Development Goals

and will provide a long-term structure for a diverse range of supporting
actions by the political and scientific communities.

*Register now for the International VELUX Award for students of
architecture 2024*
The VELUX Group invites students of architecture to participate in the
International VELUX Award competition on the theme “Light of Tomorrow”. The
2024 competition is the 11th edition, which so far has received thousands
of exciting daylight projects from more than 6000 students of architecture
around the world. Since the International VELUX Award for Students of
Architecture was first launched in 2004, it has grown into what is probably
the largest competition for students of architecture, the architects who
will shape the buildings of our future. The award invites students to
explore the role of daylight in architecture and inspire new thinking. The
aim of the award is to encourage and challenge students of architecture,
and to create a deeper understanding of this specific and ever-relevant
source of energy, light, and life.
The student teams will work on their projects in one of the two categories:
‘Daylight in buildings’ or ‘Daylight investigations’. To participate in the
competition, the first step for students is registration with an e-mail
address and a phone number. The students are then encouraged to gather
their team, connect with the teacher, and start developing their project
during the registration phase. In this way, students can have several
months to develop their ideas into innovative and out-of-the-box daylight
projects.

*About the International VELUX Award*
The overall theme of the International VELUX Award 2024 for Students of
Architecture is “Light of Tomorrow.” Launched in 2004, and held biennially,
the award seeks to challenge the future of daylight in the built
environment by inspiring creative explorations on the themes of daylight in
buildings and daylight investigations from the world’s leading future
architects.
The Award is organised in close collaboration with the International Union
of Architects (UIA) and is acknowledged by the following educational
organisations; The European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE),
The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the Architectural
Research Centers Consortium (ARCC), and the Association of Collegiate
Schools of Architecture (ACSA).

*Start planning for #LightDay2024 now!*
It is never too early to start thinking about and planning an event for the
International Day of Light in 2024. Remember that speakers are often in
high demand during May for international conferences, and it's best to give
them as much advance notice as possible - even if you are asking for online
participation. Planning early also gives you the opportunity to contact
local sources of financial support (e.g. your school, university, or
institute) and to make contact with other partners such as those on the

*Reviewing six editions of the International Day of Light! *
Every two years, the international photonics community meets at the World
of Photonics Congress in Munich, and the recent congress in June 2023 was
an ideal occasion to review progress since the first edition of the
International Day of Light that took place in 2018. In reviewing all the
information from past events

since
2018, we were able to confirm that the International Day of Light has seen
over 2,500 events take place in more than 100 countries (not to mention a
message from the International Space Station) with a total in-person
audience of 300,000 and a total audience of over a million when including
exposure through festivals and online campaigns, etc. This represents
remarkable success for an annual science-themed outreach event. There is no
shortage of enthusiasm, and we are looking forward to further exciting
