Charla: 500 to 1500 CE – The dark ages of astronomy?

*Abstract: *In standard textbooks, the history of astronomy is often
presented with a focus on actual or presumed breakthroughs, which are
usually associated with few and therefore very famous protagonists. What
happened in between those “revolutions” is much less well known. One of
those presumably dark ages are the 1000 years between 500 and 1500 CE,
which broadly define the middles ages in Europe. In the history of
astronomy this epoch follows the quantitative description of the geocentric
cosmology by Ptolemy and is followed by the transition to the heliocentric
model initiated by Nicolaus Copernicus. I this review talk I will try to
show that this millenium was not just lively, and more innovative and
progressive than probably expected, but also crucial for the development of
astronomy.
