* Science Popularisation with the Chinese Optical Society *
The Chinese Optical Society (COS) is delighted to announce its upcoming
Science Popularisation Event to commemorate the International Day of Light
on May 16th. As a preeminent organisation in the field of optics and
photonics, we remain dedicated to advocating the significance of light
science and its wide-ranging applications in our daily lives. The event
will showcase an array of engaging activities, such as informative
lectures, captivating exhibitions and hands-on interactive demonstrations
hosted by various scientific research institutions and campuses. These
activities are thoughtfully designed to educate and enthuse visitors of all
ages with a focus on professionalism, objectivity, and courtesy.
Simultaneously, Science popularisation activities will also be organised
for the general public, with a particular focus on children and
adolescents. We plan to undertake numerous science popularisation
activities for the public, including on-campus science outreach programs
and voluntary science and technology museum interpretation services, etc.
These activities strive to pique their curiosity in science and inspire
them to investigate the world surrounding them.
In general, COS student branches and professional committees will host over
45 events in honor of the International Day of Light this year. These
events will take place across more than 25 universities and research
institutes, spanning over 20 cities. In previous years, the audience
exceeded 100,000 and we anticipate a surge in the number of attendees this
year.
Being at the forefront of the optical and photonics societies, the Chinese
Optical Society is dedicated to advancing the progress of light science and
its practical implementation. We are confident that this upcoming event
will provide a valuable platform for both professionals and the general
public to gather and enhance their understanding of this dynamic field.

* Raising Awareness about lighting in Egypt and the Middle East*
LUMINO: An Artful Exploration of Light”.
Part of “Material Culture by Esorus”
LUMINO is an event planned for the International Day of Light whose main
objective is to raise awareness about lighting in Egypt and the Middle East
through a range of activities that will allow attendees to learn about and
to explore light in many different ways. Amongst the actions which will
show the beauty of light, there will be: Art installations; Interactive
installations;Talks; Open discussions; Music; and more.
The event will see the Women in Light international project by Light
Collective, and talks by: the theater lighting designer Raquel (from Brazil
and based in Berlin); the visual artist Elena Kauffmann (French based in
Cairo); Local Lighting Designer Ghada Dwaik (Egyptian based in Cairo ) as
well as installations by Ghada Dwaik & Elena Khauffmann. The location is at
Esorus Design Haus which is a “Design and Art Community Platform” in Cairo
Supporting Artists, Creatives and Designers.

world. These talks explore the significance of using natural light in
architecture and feature designers and educators actively working with
daylighting in their projects and educational programs. Supported by the
VELUX Group, the Daylight Talks have been endorsed by the International
Union of Architects (UIA) and the European Association for Architectural
Education (EAAE).
The next Daylight Talk in the 2023 series featuring Per Olaf Fjeld,
architect and professor emeritus at Oslo School of Architecture & Design
(AHO), will consider the unique relationship between daylight as part of
nature and architecture's capacity to capture and utilise its distinct
properties in the Daylight Talk titled 'Daylight: Rethinking
Relationships/Changing Perspectives'. The Daylight Talk is in collaboration
with the Oslo School of Architecture & Design (AHO) and will be presented
by architect and associate professor Kathrine Næss.
The talk will be available to watch on the D/A website from 07 June 2023.

*SPIE International Day of Light Photo Contest 2023*

International Day of Light Photo Contest is held annually to raise
awareness about the International Day of Light, and to demonstrate the
impact light has on cultural, economic, and political aspects of our global
society. Amateur and professional photographers alike are encouraged to
submit photos for a chance to win cash prizes. Photographers age 13 to 17
should submit their images to the Youth Photo Contest. The theme of the
photo contest is A World of Light: The Vital Role That Light and
Light-Based Technologies Play in Daily Life. Examples of content can
include the properties of light, light technology, light images, people
interacting with light, light and sustainable development, and more. The
2023 SPIE IDL Photo Contest runs from 16 May 2023 to 16 September 2023.

*The Daylight Award launches daylight conversations and opens for 2024

COPENHAGEN, 16 May 2023. The Daylight Award aims to raise a holistic
understanding of the importance of daylight in research and in practice.
Every second year the award honours a researcher and an architect, and
nominations for 2024 are now open. To further support cross-disciplinarity
and bridge-building, The Daylight Award is also premiering a series of

The Daylight Award honours and supports daylight research and daylight in
architecture. It acknowledges and encourages both scientific knowledge and
practical application of daylight, which interlink disciplines that are
usually addressed in separated, monocultural spheres, professional circles
or practices. The Daylight Award strives to raise a holistic understanding
of daylight and increase its positive impact on life.
*Daylight Research*
The Daylight Award for research is awarded to individuals or smaller groups
of scientists who have distinguished themselves as outstanding contributors
to internationally recognised daylight research. It acknowledges highly
original and influential advances in the areas of natural science, human
science or social science, with special emphasis on the effects of daylight
on human health, well-being and performance.
*Daylight Architecture*
The Daylight Award for architecture is awarded to one or more architects or
other professionals who have distinguished themselves by realising
architecture or creating urban environments that showcase unique use of
daylight. Special emphasis will be put on architecture that considers the
overall quality of life, its impact on human health, well-being and
performance, and its value to society. The award winner in each category is
rewarded with a personal prize of €100,000. The Daylight Award will
actively solicit nominations from organisations, architects, researchers
and other professionals who have an expertise and interest in the field of
daylight research and daylight in architecture. Additionally, the Award
accepts individual nominations from professionals.
The nominations open on 16 May 2023, UN/UNESCO’s `International Day of
Light´, and will end by 15 September 2023.

*IDL 2023 Workshop on Recreational Optics at UNED in Spain *
The authors of the scientific dissemination project “Recreational optics,
from school to home” will celebrate the International Day of Light with a
workshop on light, with colorful demonstrations of experiments featuring
participation from the audience. The activity is mainly aimed at
school-children between the 4th and 6th grades and young adults in the
first years of high school, although it is open to the participation of
anyone interested in the subject, regardless of their age or profession.
During the workshop the Fresnel kit, an attractive collection of low-cost
experimental materials carefully prepared for distribution in educational
centers, will be shown. The nature of light, color, laser, fluorescence and
phosphorescence, the camera obscura, reflection and refraction of light,
basic optical elements (prisms, lenses, mirrors), wave behavior of light
(polarization, interference, diffraction), measurement of microscopic
objects by diffraction of light, the process of vision, and optical
illusions are some of the many topics that will be featured in the
workshop, offering an entertaining overview of the nature and behavior of
light, a form of energy so present and necessary in our lives.

* Old Observatory Leiden unveils James Webb Space Telescope exhibition*
Discover the wonders of the universe like never before with the brand new
exhibition JWST Universe at the Old Observatory Leiden! Now on display
until December 2023, this immersive exhibition invites visitors to explore
the depths of space with stunning new images and groundbreaking
research.The JWST is equipped with advanced technology that enables us to
look deeper into the universe than ever before, providing a better
understanding of the Early Universe, Galaxies through time, the Life cycle
of stars, and Other worlds. The exhibition showcases the four major
research themes of the telescope, giving visitors an insight into the
latest developments in astronomy. In addition to the scientific aspects of
the exhibition, visitors can also enjoy a unique work of art. “The
Reconstruction of Mystery” by Leandros Ntolas is an installation inspired
by the JWST, designed to encourage reflection on the cultural impact of

*Scientific talks at the IDL flagship event in Spain*
The main celebration of the International Day of Light in 2023 in Spain
will take place in Andalucia in the cities of Sevilla, Granada and Málaga.
This IDL flagship event is organised by the Institute of the Academies of
Andalucia, the organisers are Prof. Benito Valdés Professor Emeritus from
Sevilla University and President of the Institute of the Academies of
Andalucia and Prof Enrique Hita Professor Emeritus from Granada University,
Vice President of the Institute of the Academies of Andalucia and former
President of the Academy of Sciences of Granada.
Besides the exhibition entitled "Light and Life" (described in the April
newsletter
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=def83c6bbe&e=773971c1ea>)
there
will be many interesting scientific talks and workshops.
Two cycles of scientific talks will take place in Sevilla (June 16th) and
in Granada (June 17th). The first cycle, under the general title “Light and
the origin of life”, contains three talks: the first one with the same
title will be given by Prof. Miguel A. De la Rosa from the Sciences Academy
of Sevilla, the second one entitled “Life without Light” will be given by
Prof. Antonio Ventosa from the Ibero American Academy of Pharmacy, and the
third one entitled “Life outside the Earth” will be given by Prof. Carlos
Briones from the Center of Astrobiology. This first cycle will take place
in the building of “Fundación Cajasol” in Sevilla on the 16th of May. The
second cycle of talks will take place in the Faculty of Sciences of the
University of Granada on the 17th of May with the general title: “Light and
health”. It consists of four talks: a) “Photo pharmacology: Medicine
controlled by light for the development of high precision therapies” given
by Prof. Rovira Algans from the Research and Development Institute, CSIC,
Barcelona, b) “The light that illuminates the organs, the tissues and the
molecules” given by Prof. Fernández Mena from the Medicine Academy of
Oriental Andalusia), c) “Light as a therapy agent” given by Prof. Delgado
Mora from the Science Academy of Granada, and d) “The medicine is blind
without a diagnosis: Points of interest and the Internet of the Medical
Things” given by Prof. García Asuero from the Ibero American Academy of
Pharmacy.
On the 1st of June the Light and Life” exhibition opening in Granada will
have two additional talks on “Light, colors, and the relation between
plants and animals” given by Prof. Benito Valdés and “Natural optical
phenomena: Light and Color in Nature” given by Prof. Enrique Hita.
The celebration of the International Day of Light will continue in the 1st
of September in Málaga with two exhibitions “The Microscope through the
History” and the already mentioned “Light and Life” exhibition in the
building of the Society of Economy of Malaga (Sociedad Económica de Amigos
del País de Málaga). In the opening ceremony a scientific talk entitled
“Looking through a microscope” will be given by Prof. Antonio Heredia
Bayona from the Academy of Sciences of Málaga. These two exhibitions will
be closed on September 28th with a scientific talk entitled “The natural
colors. The colors of the plants” given by Prof. Benito Valdés, President
of the Institute of Academies of Andalusia.
As a continuation of the IDL in Andalusia several activities will be
organised in September 2023 in the Science Museum of Granada (Parque de las
Ciencias de Granada) with the general title “Handling the light:
information with light and its applications”. First, there will be a new
exhibition “Holography: a revolutionary technique for registering
information” with a talk on “Registering information in three dimensions:
Holography and its applications” given by Prof. Enrique Hita Vice President
of the Institute of Academies of Andalusia. Besides two additional talks
will be given with hands-on experiments, “Light spectra: the DNA of matter”
given by Adolf Cortel, retired professor from a secondary school in
Catalonia, and “Solar light and the lack of water” given by Dr. Isabel
Oller, researcher at the Plataforma Solar de Almeria, which is the largest
concentrating solar technology research, development, and test center in
Europe.
