as
soon as you can.
And we appreciate just how much work and commitment goes into organising
such events, so don't hesitate to let us know if you wish us to highlight
your plans via our newsletter. This can be a great way to give you some
well-deserved recognition! And if you may be involved in organising a
technical or science-themed conference this year, why not think about
including a special session related to outreach, education or training? Our
experience is that such sessions are very enthusiastically attended, and
provide a great forum for meeting new collaborators.
In the newsletter items below, we continue to highlight activities and
plans of our partners, and we also include again the link to our event
organiser survey where we want to hear from you with suggestions about what
we can do better. It only takes 5 minutes! In addition, we also provide a
newsletter item describing a special survey being conducted by the
International Astronomical Union Office for Astronomy Outreach on the
important issue of light pollution. A link is in the article below, and you
can access this directly here

*Light & Lilacs: Optics Outreach Tent at the Rochester Lilac Festival, May
12-21, 2023*
The SPIE and Optica Student Chapters at The Institute of Optics (University
of Rochester, NY, USA) are bringing back the Optics Outreach Tent at the
125th Rochester Lilac Festival, May 12 – 21, 2023. Our student teams are
hard at work preparing interactive science outreach demos that explore
light, colour, and optics – fun for all ages! Take a look at the beautiful
cell structure of a lilac under a microscope, investigate how your eyes
perceive colour, learn about thermal imaging on the James Webb Space
Telescope, and much more! Designs, documentation, and educational materials
for our demos will be made available online later this year. The Optics
Outreach Tent is generously supported by Optimax Systems, Inc., SPIE, and
the Optica Foundation.
The Lilac Festival features live music, arts and crafts, food, and
family-friendly activities alongside hundreds of varieties of lilacs in
full bloom. It attracts over 500,000 people to Rochester’s Highland Park
each May and coincides with the UNESCO International Day of Light on May
16. For more background and examples of our activities, you can read about the
previous outreach event at the 2019 Lilac Festival

*Dark & Quiet Skies Survey from the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach*
The problem of light pollution touches all areas of society, from
astronomers wishing to study the universe, to people whose quality of life
is affected by streetlamps that shine into their homes. Light pollution
also has an impact on the environment through adverse effects on wildlife
and ecosystems, and through energy waste that increases global warming and
creates burdens on local and national economies worldwide.
This May, the Dark and Quiet Skies Global Outreach Project of the International
Astronomical Union's Office for Astronomy Outreach (IAU OAO)
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=70eb6bb071&e=773971c1ea>
raises awareness about the need to preserve dark and quiet skies. These two
elements – dark and quiet – go hand-in-hand, but are not necessarily the
same. Dark sky protection arises from light pollution abatement, policy,
law, and activism, across the electromagnetic spectrum. Quiet sky
protection refers to the threat posed by satellite constellation
interference, and is the primary concern of our partner, the IAU Centre for
the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation
Interference (CPS)
Through this project, people will learn about the importance of dark and
quiet skies for human culture, heritage, and health, in addition to the
health of our ecosystems, and the importance of dark and quiet skies for
astronomy research.
In preparation for Dark and Quiet Skies, the IAU OAO is gathering
information about how countries around the world approach the fight against
light pollution. In particular, the Global Light Pollution Initiative Survey
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=53d98cc44e&e=773971c1ea>
is
asking international respondees to provide some brief information about
initiatives happening in their country and to provide examples of ways
people can get involved in this effort that are relevant to their
communities. With your help, this survey will be an extremely valuable
resource in the global fight against light pollution. You can read more
about the Dark and Quiet Skies project in 2022 here

.
If you are aware of, or involved in, any form of event or action to protect
our dark and quiet skies, please fill in the survey here

* Gdansk Festival of Light. Bringing People Together with Light*
Want to celebrate the International Day of Light? Come to Gdańsk! On May
13-14 2023, the city of Gdańsk will be hosting the second edition of the
Festival of Light. For one weekend only, Góra Gradowa – the hill
overlooking the city centre with the most beautiful view of Gdańsk – will
turn into the most illuminated point on the map of Poland. There will be
multiple shows, exhibitions and workshops joined by a common theme – light,
with the whole spectrum of possibilities it offers.
The Gdańsk Festival of Light is a grassroots initiative that brings
together artists, scientists and makers associated with several local
institutions, among others Hevelianum Science Centre
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=4c8dfc0c8b&e=773971c1ea>
and Hackerspace Tricity

The organisers are an independent group of culture animators that joined
forces and resources to do something that has never been done before – a
festival created from the bottom up, by people, for people, without a
curator, without a director, without limits.
Celebration of light is also an opportunity to integrate the community. The
event is completely free and everyone is invited to participate and
co-create it. If you have an idea that you’d like to set in motion – join
us in creating the next editions of the Festival of Light.
The programme of the event and registration for workshops will be soon
available through the website

*Don't forget to tell us what you think! The 2023 IDL event organiser
survey.*
The International Day of Light secretariat is constantly striving to
support international partners who wish to organise events, and to provide
as many helpful resources as possible. Since 2018, over 2200 events have
taken place in more than 85 countries around the world, ranging from small
events in classrooms, to large citizen science initiatives and global
awareness-raising campaigns. But we always want to improve and make sure
that we are responding to the needs of our mostly volunteer organisers, and
so we have prepared a very brief survey with some simple questions. It
should only take 5 minutes of your time to fill out, and we will be
grateful for all feedback and suggestions. Please click on this link

* Student branches of the Chinese Optical Society mobilise for IDL2023*
There are 28 student branches included in the Chinese Optical Society
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=b2764f0dae&e=773971c1ea>(COS),
which are found in universities and institutes across the country. Members
of the branches not only engage in academic study and research, but also
actively contribute to the popularisation of science and volunteer service
in the field of optics. In recent years, various activities have been
organised by the branches in Jilin Province to welcome the International
Day of Light, and 2023 is no exception. Extensive planning is now underway
from student volunteers from the COS Student branches of Changchun
University of Science and Technology, Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine
Mechanics and Physics(Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Jilin University.
In particular, 2023 will see a range of engaging activities, such as
exchange workshops on scientific research achievements, academic salons,
optical knowledge quizzes, and popular science activities for the general
public. Members from the branch of Changchun University of Science and
Technology plan to go to a primary school to teach elementary students
about optics and lead them in small experiments. They will continue to
visit the Museum of Optical Science and Technology to provide voluntary
interpretation services to the public. At the same time, the three branches
will carry out activities together. In order to promote mutual
understanding and cooperation among regional research institutions, a
number of undergraduate and postgraduate students from the three branches
will visit the laboratory to learn from each other and share scientific
research results and technologies.
