News and Update from the International Day of Light for February 2023
* Dear Supporters of the International Day of Light,*
If early indications are anything to go by, this year's International Day
of Light will see some fantastic international celebrations. We are
regularly receiving event registrations
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=9274d511a1&e=773971c1ea>
from
around the world even at this early stage, with planned activities
including science-themed conferences, outreach displays, lighting
tutorials, festivals and more. Please make sure that your event or events
are included and register
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=504b195fcf&e=773971c1ea>
as
soon as you can.
In the newsletter below, we highlight some activities of our partners, and
we also include again the link to our event organiser survey where we want
to hear from you with suggestions about what we can do better. It only
takes 5 minutes! As usual, our website contains very useful information
about all aspects of event organisation
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=e04defb394&e=773971c1ea>,
and feel free to review past events
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=424eaef235&e=773971c1ea>
for inspiration as well.
And if you may be involved in organising a technical or science-themed
conference this year, why not think about including a special session
related to outreach, education or training? Our experience is that such
sessions are very enthusiastically attended, and provide a great forum for
meeting new collaborators.
We encourage you all to continue following and engaging with our social
media channels using the hashtag #LightDay2023 and the official channels: @

*Don't forget to tell us what you think! The 2023 IDL event organiser
survey.*
The International Day of Light secretariat is constantly striving to
support international partners who wish to organise events, and to provide
as many helpful resources as possible. Since 2018, over 2200 events have
taken place in more than 85 countries around the world, ranging from small
events in classrooms, to large citizen science initiatives and global
awareness-raising campaigns. But we always want to improve and make sure
that we are responding to the needs of our mostly volunteer organisers, and
so we have prepared a very brief survey with some simple questions. It
should only take 5 minutes of your time to fill out, and we will be
grateful for all feedback and suggestions. Please click on this link

and a Ukrainian writer, Anastasiia Reshetnyk (*@thepath_i_chose

to document stories of Ukrainian refugees who have settled in Bernberg
(population 5,000) in Gummersbach, Germany since the beginning of the
Ukrainian refugee crisis in 2022
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=cb75055db1&e=773971c1ea>.
The
project aims to collect and preserve cultural stories and to serve as an
important visual record of the migration experience. The title draws on the
fact that sunflowers have been used as a symbol of peace throughout
Ukraine's history, and are recognized as its national flower.
Anastasiia and Saurabh, who both live in Bernberg, have already met with 7
refugee families living in a converted senior home in their neighbourhood,
collecting stories that depict loss and longing, but also the resilience of
Ukrainians navigating this strange and difficult time. Now, they would like
to share this important art project - using light to tell these individual
stories - with the International Day of Light community.

architecture and feature designers and educators actively working with
daylighting in their projects and educational programs. Supported by the
VELUX Group, the Daylight Talks have been endorsed by the International
Union of Architects (UIA) and the European Association for Architectural
Education (EAAE).
First in the series for 2023 is the Daylight Talk 'Lightscapes' by
Fuensanta Nieto, founding partner of Nieto Sobejana Arquitectos, in
collaboration with IE School of Architecture & Design in Madrid. Professor
and former Dean, Martha Thorne will present the talk. ‘Lightscapes’ will
reflect on the ways in which Nieto Sobejana Arquitectos works with natural
light as a common concept that unites their projects
