*Ana María Cetto wins 2023 UNESCO-Kalinga Prize *
We are truly delighted to announce that Ana María Cetto from the National
Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has been recognised as the 2023
laureate of the UNESCO-Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science. Ana
María Cetto has been at the heart of the International Year of Light and
International Day of Light initiatives since 2012, and was indeed the key
individual who ensured the smooth running of the various political and
diplomatic steps as these resolutions progressed within the UNESCO and
United Nations systems. But her commitment to science and making it
internationally accessible spans many decades. A Research Professor
at UNAM’s Institute of Physics, Ana María Cetto holds a PhD in physics from
UNAM and a Master of Biophysics degree from Harvard University in the USA.
Amongst her many achievements include being project coordinator for the
UNAM Museum of Light of which she was Director; leading the translation of
science outreach materials into ten of her country’s indigenous
languages in her previous role as President of the Mexican Physical
Society; acting as President of the UNESCO Open Science Steering Committee;
and holder of the UNESCO Chair on Science Diplomacy and Heritage. For more

*Welcoming ITATRA as Collaborating Partner in Madagascar*
ITATRA

is a Madagascar-based NGO whose missions include promoting science
education and outreach, training high school teachers, as well as
conducting research in education and pedagogy. ITATRA is a Malagasy word
which means expansion, and ITATRA is committed to achieving the goal that
each Malagasy student deserves a better education, a teacher who is happy
and passionate about their work, and an enjoyable learning environment.
According to national data, the percentage of high school students majoring
in physics, chemistry and mathematics in Madagascar has dropped from 11% to
5% within 10 years, while the number of students overall has doubled.
Students do not see the applications and real-world use of what they have
learned, and scientific subjects are always seen as difficult in
Madagascar. Further studies specialising in the field of optics are
nonexistent. ITATRA aims to address this directly by exploring different
ways to produce and provide materials for teaching scientific fields, and
training the teachers and in conducting science outreach.
For the International Day of Light in 2023, ITATRA organised a photo
contest with the Foldscope microscope,

targeting high school students. Foldscope is a paper microscope that
combines low-cost materials with precision optics*, *resulting in a
high-quality and affordable instrument that can also attach to mobile
phones for imaging. The competition exposed students to the fascinating
world of microscopy, and a selection of the remarkable images obtained can

*World Science Day promotes Building Trust in Science *
The 10 November saw the celebration of the World Science Day for Peace and
Development

highlighting the important role of science in society and the need to
engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. By
linking science with society, the World Science Day for Peace and
Development underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily
lives, and the place of scientists in broadening our understanding of the
remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more
sustainable.
For 2023, the theme of the World Science day was Building Trust in Science,

echoing closely the Trust Science Campaign that was held in 2021 for the
International Day of Light. UNESCO headquarters saw a special high-level
roundtable on this topic, where discussions covered the links between
science and society, the status of scientific research, the importance of
freedom and safety of scientists, and the vital role of science
popularisation. In fact, these principles are already present in two UNESCO
instruments, the Recommendation on Science and Scientific Researchers
(2017) and the Recommendation on Open Science (2021). Links to these and

*Jury Announced for International VELUX Award for students of architecture
2024*
As we posted in our previous newsletter, The VELUX Group invites students
of architecture to participate in the International VELUX Award competition
on the theme “Light of Tomorrow”. The 2024 competition is the 11th edition,
which since 2004 has received thousands of exciting daylight projects from
more than 6000 students of architecture around the world. The student
teams will work on their projects in one of the two categories: ‘Daylight
in buildings’ or ‘Daylight investigations’. The registration

for participation in the competition is open from 1 September 2023 and
stays open until 1 April 2024. Submission opens on 15 April 2024 and the

In collaboration with The International Union of Architects (UIA), the jury
members for the award have now been announced. They are:

- Ewa Kurylowicz (Poland)
- Song Yehao (China)
- Alberto Veiga (Spain)
- Kent Holm (Denmark).

The jury will first meet in Copenhagen in June 2024 to review the
submitted projects and select 10 regional winners. The jury will meet again
at the end of August to find the global winners after presentations from
all regional winners.
*About the International VELUX Award*
The overall theme of the International VELUX Award 2024 for Students of
Architecture is “Light of Tomorrow.” Launched in 2004, and held biennially,
the award seeks to challenge the future of daylight in the built
environment by inspiring creative explorations on the themes of daylight in
buildings and daylight investigations from the world’s leading future
architects.
The Award is organised in close collaboration with the International Union
of Architects (UIA) and is acknowledged by the following educational
organisations; The European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE),
The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the Architectural
Research Centers Consortium (ARCC), and the Association of Collegiate
Schools of Architecture (ACSA).

It is never too early to start thinking about and planning an event for the
International Day of Light in 2024. Remember that speakers are often in
high demand during May for international conferences, and it's best to give
them as much advance notice as possible - even if you are asking for online
participation. Planning early also gives you the opportunity to contact
local sources of financial support (e.g. your school, university, or
institute) and to make contact with other partners such as those on the

The annual SPIE International Day of Light Photo Contest is held to raise
awareness about IDL and the vital role that light and light-based

*Celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science*
The United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science

celebrated every year on February 11 to support the increased participation
of women and girls in science. At present, less than 30 per cent of
researchers worldwide are women and indeed, only around 30 per cent of all
female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Many
International Day of Light partners have developed year-round actions to
address gender imbalance in science, with a particular focus on February

and other contributions to the fields of science, optics, and
engineering. Seven thousand copies of the notebook are printed and
distributed, free of charge, in more than 25 countries worldwide annually.
