The 16 May 2023 will see the sixth celebration of the UNESCO International
Day of Light, one of the most anticipated science events on the global
calendar of United Nations observances. Since its inception in 2018, over
2000 activities and events have taken place in more than 100 countries,
even reaching into space aboard the International Space Station! We’d like
to thank you all for the hard work that has made the International Day of
Light such a success.

technology, lighting and lighting quality, astronomy, philosophy, human
rights, education and more!
If you haven’t yet made plans yourselves, remember that the International
Day of Light celebrations do not all need to take place on the 16 May
itself. While many will naturally be organised around that date and during
the week that follows, events at any time of the year can receive

*Chinese Optical Society Activities Continue! *
Since the proclamation of the International Day of Light, the Chinese
Optical Society (COS) has been dedicated to organising science
popularisation activities for the general public, with a particular focus
on children and young people. The Chinese Optical Society, along with its
professional committees and student chapters, has undertaken numerous
science popularisation activities for the public, including on-campus
science outreach programs and voluntary science and technology museum
interpretation services etc., which have received significant attention and
support.
The upcoming International Day of Light has prompted a series of
preparations for a range of activities. The student branch of COS at East
China Normal University is hosting a family event entitled "Sailing to the
Future: Follow the Light", in order to stimulate primary and secondary
school students to explore the curiosity of scientific truth and enlighten
the scientific spirit. The Chinese Optical Society and the Beijing
Institute of Space Mechanics and Electricity will collaborate on a popular
science lecture entitled "Principles of Aerospace Optical Camera Imaging"
for students at Chengdu No.7 Middle School, combining theoretical knowledge
of space optical remote sensing with practical applications. The Anhui
Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics is organising a drawing competition
for children with us to showcase the marvels of light through paintbrush
strokes. We have many exciting initiatives in the works, and our commitment
to making science accessible to all remains unwavering.

* Lightsources.org International Day of Light Early Career event Bright
Expectations: Insights from scientists working at 4th Generation Light
Sources*
Lightsources.org, the international collaboration of large light source
science facilities known as synchrotrons and Free Electron Lasers (FELs),
is bringing together a panel of scientists from around the world to share
their insights on what it is like to work at a 4th generation light source,
the newest of these powerful machines. This interactive session will
include short talks from the panelists on the facility they work at/use and
their current roles. Ashley White (Director of Communications Interim
Deputy for Strategy, Advanced Light Source at Berkeley Lab), our moderator
will then pose questions to the panel on their career journeys, their views
on the advantages and potential of 4th generation lights sources, potential
breakthroughs on the horizon and more. Bright Expectations is a free

world. These talks explore the significance of using natural light in
architecture and feature designers and educators actively working with

VELUX Group, the Daylight Talks have been endorsed by the International
Union of Architects (UIA) and the European Association for Architectural
Education (EAAE).
The Daylight Talk 'Lightscapes' by Fuensanta Nieto

is now available to watch on the D/A Daylight and Architecture website for
free.
The talk explores a range of unique, inspiring architectural projects by
Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos that utilise daylight in different ways to
emphasise the specific context, materials and textures of each space. From
the extension of a museum inside a ruined castle in Halle, Germany, a
contemporary art centre in Cordoba, Spain, to the Arvo Pärt musical
cultural center in an Estonian forest - to name but a few. Fuensanta Nieto
considers how the element of light acts as a uniting concept across such
varied projects with reference to skylights, interstitial light, perforated
lights, reflective light, trellises and shadows. The Daylight Talk is
presented in collaboration with the IE School of Architecture and Design in
Madrid.

* International Association of Physics Students (IAPS) Light Photo
Competition*
The International Association of Physics Students (IAPS) is an association
of physics students and student societies from around the globe, working to
promote peaceful collaborations amongst them. IAPS publishes a regular
journal jIAPS (the Journal of the International Association of Physics
Students) which runs a monthly photo competition. In celebration of the
International Day of Light, the May photo competition has the theme of
light. This could be anything from the role of light in science (including
images taken using telescopes and microscopes) to light painting and
astrophotography; or you could take a photo of nature: a sunrise or
reflections on a lake... get creative!
Amateurs, hobbyists or professionals – everyone is encouraged to

*IDL flagship event in Spain 2023: “Light and Life” Exhibition*
The most important celebration of the International Day of Light in 2023 in
Spain will take place in Andalucia in the cities of Sevilla, Granada and
Málaga. This IDL flagship event is organised by the Institute of the
Academies of Andalucia, the organisers being: Prof. Benito Valdés,
Professor Emeritus from Sevilla University and President of the Institute
of the Academies of Andalucia and Prof Enrique Hita, Professor Emeritus
from Granada University, Vice President of the Institute of the Academies
of Andalucia and former President of the Academy of Sciences of Granada.
This celebration includes several activities: first, an exhibition entitled
"Light and Life" consisting of 20 posters which have been written and
edited by several professors from the Andalusian Universities and members
of the Andalusian Academies. A book or catalog accompanies the exhibition
with articles written by the same authors and covering more detailed
explanations about the subjects described in the posters. In addition,
there will be two cycles of interactive academic conferences, to be held in
Granada and Seville, with the titles: "Light and health: advanced light
therapies" for the Granada cycle and "Light and the origin of life" for the
Seville cycle. Moreover, there will be an activity consisting of talks
supported by demonstrations at the Science Park in Granada.
The opening ceremony of the IDL flagship event in Spain will coincide with
the exhibition opening on the 16th of May in the main building of Sevilla
University. This exhibition will be in Sevilla until the end of May, later,
on June 1, this exhibition will be opened at the building of the Faculty of
Sciences of the University of Granada. In September the “Light and Life”
Exhibition will be opened at the Exhibition Hall of the Society of Economy
of Malaga (Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País de Málaga). In this case
another exhibition on “The microscope through the History” will be
collocated with the “Light and Life” exhibition.
The panels in the “Light and Life” exhibition cover many of the objectives
of the International Day of Light celebration. No doubt, the public
visiting this exhibition will be enriched in their scientific culture and
will be attracted by the beauty of the panels and their scientific content.
There are panels covering basic concepts such as the nature of light,
knowing the universe through light or light and the origin of life; others
concern vision science, covering topics such as light perception by the
human eye, colour perception, visual brain areas, light in vision and
ophthalmology or light perception by animals. Moreover, there are those
dealing with colour from different aspects such as: natural colours, plant
colours or the molecular basis of colouration. There are, as well, several
panels relating light and life, such as the aforementioned panel on light
and the origin of life and those describing the transformation of light
energy into chemical energy (photosynthesis), or the origin of life in the
absence of light, extremophile organisms or abyssal energy sources. As
proposed questions through panel’s topics, we are asked about the
possibility of life outside the Earth, while in others, based on the study
of the absorption of light by water, we are asked about the luminous and
aphotic zones of the oceans and the light in the abyssal depths. Other
types of electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays or gamma radiation and
the role of the ozonosphere are presented and discussed. It is of undoubted
interest to learn about the scientific basis and applications of lasers,
the fundamentals of fluorescent and phosphorescent minerals and the use of
light as a source of energy, generating photovoltaic energy.
These magnificent panels have been written and designed by experts,
who are scientists
of the Academies of Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy of Andalusia and
professors at the Universities of Seville and Granada. The panels and the
articles contained in the catalog will be a source of inspiration and
knowledge for those who visit the exhibition. It is our wish that this
exhibition can travel to different cities and different institutions so
that it can reach all the interested public, regardless of their age. This
exhibition will also be an inspiration for the work done with their
students by teachers and professors at Secondary Schools. It would be
desirable, if possible, that the Institute of the Academies of Andalusia
make these panels and this catalog available to schools and cultural
institutions.

* Citizen Science Light Walk in Potsdam, Germany*
Raising awareness of light pollution is a central goal of the International
Day of Light and a priority of many partners and partner
organisations. Light pollution touches all areas of society: from
astronomers to ordinary people whose quality of life is affected by
unwanted light shining into their homes. Light pollution also has adverse
impact on ecosystems, such as on animals and plants, and is economically
wasteful.
Using the Nightlights App

citizen scientists classify and count lights and provide important and
valuable data to monitor the transition to better practice lighting. You
are welcome to help collect data! For our special “time of night” campaign
this year, we want to find out how the distribution and use of lights
changes during the course of the evening and night. For example, how many
businesses turn off their signs late at night, and how does this vary with
geography?
If you want to learn more about different forms of light and our project,
you are invited to join our Light Walk in Potsdam, Germany on 16 May, 8 pm
at Luisenplatz! Why do we count lights in this way? Because the night
counts!
This project is another example of the importance of understanding light
pollution and the ways in which different countries and cities are
addressing the problem. You can also read about the efforts of the IAU
Office for Astronomy Outreach in our last newsletter and participate
in the Global
Light Pollution Initiative Survey.

* Limoges OPTICA Student Chapter Photo Contest *
Lim'Optix is an OPTICA Student Chapter in Limoges, France. It aims to bring
together all students and Ph.D. students interested in the fields of optics
and photonics at the University of Limoges. The mission is to provide
networking, mentoring, and support both within the student community and to
local communites outside the institution
This month, Lim'Optix is organising a photo contest in celebration of the
International Day of Light. The contest invites participants to submit
their most creative photos related to their research in the field of optics
and photonics, including experiments, data analysis, simulations, or any
other creation of their own. The contest runs from April 14th to May 7th.
Participants can submit photos via email to limoptixchapter en xlim.fr. The
image above shows the winner of the 2022 edition from Yann Leventoux. The
science in the photo is based on supercontinuum light generation in
nonlinear optics.
