Dear UNOOSA Newsletter subscriber,

The celebration of *World Space Week*, declared by the UN General Assembly
in 1999, is around the corner. This annual event commemorates the launch of
the first satellite, Sputnik-1, on October 4, 1957, as well as the entry
into force of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967. This year’s World
Space Week is particularly special, as it marks the 65th and 55th
anniversaries of Sputnik and the Outer Space Treaty, respectively.

The theme “*Space and Sustainability*” selected for 2022 relates to how
humanity uses space to drive change on Earth. As part of World Space
Week, *UNOOSA
hosts a webinar series* to promote sustainable space exploration for a
sustainable planet. The series explores topics of *sustainability from
space* and *sustainability in space * and addresses topics that will be
discussed in-depth at the upcoming* World Space Forum: Sustainability in
Space for Sustainability on Earth *in December 2022.
