*Resumen: *UV-luminous galaxies with extreme emission-line properties, such
as the “Green Pea” (GPs) galaxies, are excellent low-redshift analogs of
primeval galaxies driving reionization at redshift z>6. They provide a
unique laboratory to study compact starbursts in low-metallicity
environments and understand how feedback shapes the ISM conditions that are
common at the early stages of galaxy evolution. Besides, the direct
detection of Lyman continuum emission in GPs with HST has opened a new
avenue to learn about the main physical processes governing the escape of
ionizing photons from galaxies, thus providing unique insight to understand
cosmic re-ionization. In this talk, I will present results from recent
observational studies on extreme emission-line galaxies that are aimed at
resolving the complex interplay between massive bursts of star formation
and feedback, the ISM physical properties (ionization, chemical
abundances), and the escape of ionizing radiation using optical and UV
imaging and high-resolution spectroscopy. Lessons learned from these low-z
analogs will be discussed while presenting some of the first results of
early release science (ERS) programs of JWST aimed at providing similar
analyses on high-z galaxies.
