*Liter of Light exhibiting solar art installation at the Pyramids of Giza*
Throughout 2022, Liter of Light

has been working on a series of unique solar art installations to promote
the goals of the United Nations and UNESCO in raising awareness of the need
for sustainable energy solutions, and the important role of local
communities in achieving this objective. In particular, in support of
the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals week and COP27

in Egypt, Liter of Light installed a large-scale, hand-built solar artwork
in the vicinity of the Pyramids of Giza (see photo).
This artwork was developed in partnership with Morocco-based social
enterprise SHEMS for Lighting

and brings together the skills of UNESCO-recognised artisans from Safi,
Morocco, as well as over 1000 young people from schools and the Rotaract
Clubs in the United Arab Emirates. In addition, the circuits for the solar
lights were assembled by young people from Egypt as part of the Light It
Forward

challenge, an ongoing initiative that invites all to do their part to solve
energy poverty by giving 30 minutes of their time to build solar lighting
circuits by hand.
The installation is centred upon the words *The Power Is Yours*, oriented
towards the pyramids, with 17 rays of sunlight representing the 17 United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals

and equally includes in its design Egyptian symbols for energy and life.
The overall message aims to reinforce global efforts to protect our
environment, and thus preserve and improve the quality of life worldwide,
especially in countries that risk being most severely impacted by climate
change.
Liter of Light has been a key collaborating partner of the UNESCO
International Day of Light and the International Year of Light since 2015,
and has carried out a wide range of award-winning actions over many years
to raise awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

*The International VELUX Award 2022 announces two Global winners*
Every second year since 2004, the VELUX Group has invited students of
architecture to participate in the International VELUX Award. The award
seeks to challenge the students to explore the role of daylight in
architecture and inspire new thinking. The aim of the award is to engage
with students of architecture about how to use sunlight and daylight as
main sources of energy and light and how to ensure health and well-being of
the people who live and work in buildings.
The VELUX Group is proud to announce the global winners of the
International VELUX Award 2022 for Students of Architecture. The jury of
internationally acclaimed architects including John Ronan, Anupama Kundoo,
Rainer Hofmann and Fuensanta Nieto selected two global winners following
live presentations by 9 regional winners at The World Architecture Festival
in Lisbon on 02 December. The 10 finalists from 9 different countries
around the globe were chosen among 507 daylight projects, submitted by
students from 211 schools of architecture in 63 countries.
Since the regional winners of the competition

were announced in July 2022, the students have been awaiting the chance to
present their projects to the jury in the final round of the competition.
Finally, the jury saw the live presentations and had a chance to ask
questions to the teams. Based on the presentations, the following projects
were selected as the global winners.

* IDL Outreach and 2023 annual FIP Symposium at the Fitzpatrick Institute
for Photonics*
The Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics (FIP) at Duke University (Durham,
NC, USA) is internationally-recognised as a leading centre in photonics and
optics research and education, and a strong supporter of outreach and
public engagement in all areas of science. FIP has been a major contributor
to the International Year of Light in 2015 and the International Day of
Light celebrations since 2018, with efforts including regular
high-profile speakers at the annual FIP Symposium - Frontiers in
Photonics, participation in high-level events at UNESCO, and educational
activities linking faculty, staff and students together with the local
community. One recent exciting event of this kind was an inaugural Light
Painting Photography Workshop that was held on 13 October 2022. Light
Painting is a highly visual and dramatic way to create remarkable images
combining the technologies of photonics with ideas and concepts from art

during the outreach program. More generally, the Fitzpatrick Institute of
Photonics has recently published a review of its diverse contributions to
photonics outreach in the latest edition of their annual newsletter
Broadband. The newsletter also provides a comprehensive report on the many
other activities of the institute and shows how research and education can
combine for the betterment of society.
For 2023, the FIP Annual Meeting and Symposium is scheduled for March
13-14, 2023. The in-person program will include lectures from distinguished
speakers, contributed papers and posters by investigators from Duke
University and other academic and industrial institutions. The special
themes for 2023 are Nanoscopy & Superresolution; AI & Quantum Era of
Photonics; Photonics & Global Health including a Global Health Panel
Session. The Symposium Keynote Speaker is Nobel laureate Professor Stefan
Hell, and a full list of other Plenary and Invited speakers can be viewed

FIP and the Duke Optical Student Chapter (DOSC) are also planning another

* Celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science*
The United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science

celebrated every year on February 11 to support the increased participation
of women and girls in science. At present, less than 30 per cent of

address gender imbalance in science, with a particular focus on February

and other contributions to the fields of science, optics, and
engineering. Seven thousand copies of the planner are printed and
distributed, free of charge, in more than 25 countries worldwide annually.
