Report on IDL 2021 from the International Day of Light Secretariat
*Dear Supporters of the International Day of Light*
We are delighted to announce that the International Day of Light in 2021
was once again a tremendous worldwide success, and the purpose of this
brief newsletter is to provide you with a summary of the key information,
and links to more detailed reports.
Although there are continual challenges being faced by all sectors of
society, the enthusiasm of the International Day of Light Community during
2021 resulted in over 360 registered events in 64 countries covering a very
wide range of themes from basic science, photonics, lighting, healthcare,
energy, industry, art, culture, education and more. The social media
impact of the International Day of Light was wide and impressive, with
messages on various platforms from multiple UN agencies - UNESCO of course,
UNESCO national commissions, the UN, UNDP, UN Women, UNESCO Courier, and
engagements from many others, including organizations such as the IAU, the
Sustainable Energy for All Initiative, LIGO, The Nobel Prize, ELI, the US
Department of Energy, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Fermilab, the Royal
Opera House, and many other national and international scientific societies
and bodies.
The Trust Science campaign launch was an important highlight, and attracted
support from over 4500 signatories including Nobel and Breakthrough Prize
laureates, other UNESCO and major award winners, science advocates and
communicators, and members of the scientific community worldwide. We would
like to thank especially the IEEE Photonics Society, Optica (formerly OSA),
and SPIE for having led this initiative which has been extremely important
on multiple levels. The campaign resonated very strongly internationally,
and was included specifically in the Official IDL 2021 Message from
UNESCO's Director General.
You can download detailed infographics and reports on the International Day
of Light 2021 and the Trust Science campaign at the IDL website reports page

This page also includes links to download the Official Messages from the
Director General of UNESCO.
We could not achieve such success without your help, and as always, please
accept our most sincere thanks for your continued support! We are now
looking forward to 2022, and you will soon receive a message with an update
of our plans for next year. The International Day of Light in 2022 will
mark our 5th annual celebration, and will be an occasion to continue
building capacity and raising awareness of the importance of science in
society.
