*FONDECYT Postdoctoral fellowships in Astronomy at ULS, 2022*

The Department of Astronomy at Universidad de La Serena (ULS) invites
applications for sponsoring a 3-year FONDECYT postdoctoral research
fellowship in astronomy. Successful applicants are expected to collaborate
with members of the Group of Galaxy Formation and Evolution, Prof. Antonela
Monachesi, Prof. Facundo Gomez, Prof. Ricardo Amorin and Prof. Sergio
Torres-Flores, in research topics focused on numerical astrophysics,
resolved stellar populations, multi-band imaging and IFU spectroscopy.

Postdocs of the Group of Galaxy Formation and Evolution can benefit from
our Partner Group with the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in
Garching, Germany and will have guaranteed access to exciting new numerical
and observational datasets, such as the  Auriga simulations, S-PLUS, LSST
and SDSS-V. We seek candidates particularly interested in exploiting these
data sets. Postdocs can also apply as PI to all professional observatories
operating in Chile, including ALMA, ESO, Gemini-S and Magellan telescopes
and are encouraged to lead their own projects.

The expected beginning of these fellowships is April 15, 2022. The
eligibility is limited to researchers that have received their Ph.D.
between Jan 1, 2018, and the FONDECYT application deadline (19 of August,
2021). This period is extended backward by one year per child for
women/legal tutors with children born in this period. The fellowships
include a competitive salary and funding for travel, publications,
equipment and health insurance.

Our Department of Astronomy is in a state of vigorous expansion and
currently has 14 Professors, 6 Postdocs and 29 graduate students. We are
committed to maintaining a diverse and inclusive work environment.
Universidad de La Serena, which is located in a beautiful and touristic
coastal city, is one of the most important Chilean public universities in
Northern Chile, surrounded by large international observatories such as
LCO, CTIO, Gemini South, SOAR, and some of the biggest astronomical
projects in the world for the next decade, such as LSST, GMT and E-ELT.

Applications should be submitted by e-mail in pdf format to
fagomez en userena.cl at the latest by Monday, August 9th 2021 to ensure full
consideration. They should include a brief cover letter (1-page), research
statement (max. 3 pages; including current and previous research and a
research plan while working at ULS), and a CV (with a publication list).
In addition, applicants should provide the names and contact information of
3 references willing to provide letters of recommendation on request.  We
encourage applicants to get in contact with the professors, if they have
preferred potential sponsors. We encourage applications from women and
minority groups.
