Latest news and updates from the International Day of Light Secretariat
*Dear Supporters of the International Day of Light,*

Thank you all again for your fantastic support in making the celebration of
the International Day of Light a grand success. The International Day of
Light in 2021 saw events worldwide having tremendous impact, particularly
on the theme of promoting improved trust in science. You can download our
detailed reports on the International Day of Light 2021 here
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=22dbdd5f6c&e=773971c1ea>
.

We are now enthusiastically preparing for the International Day of Light
2022. And as the various newsletter items below will show, members of the
International Day of Light community are already working hard with
awareness-raising and preparatory activities.

We are now welcoming registration of events
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=49861f5690&e=773971c1ea>
for
next year on our global calendar. In this regard, note that the
International Day of Light 2022 falls on a Monday, and so we have the
chance for a strong focus during the entire week of 16-21 May. Of course,
we remain completely flexible, and events celebrating light at all other
times of the year can also be recognized as part of the International Day
of Light!

Many events will likely be organized using online and hybrid formats, but
hopefully, we may see some return to face-to-face outreach with the public
and schools. Of course, virtual events do provide other opportunities to
hear from a broad range of international speakers, and allow us to reach a
much larger audience. Our website contains useful information about all
aspects of event organisation.

The Year 2022 also celebrates two exciting United Nations International
Years, on the themes of ‘Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development,’ and
‘Glass’. Both link closely to the objectives of the International Day of
Light, and further information is provided in the article below. As always,
we will be promoting as much as possible the importance of light and
light-based technologies to achieve the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals

In fact, you can read a recent editorial on how science can contribute to
these goals here.

*Celebrate Two United Nations International Years in 2022*

The United Nations General Assembly has recently proclaimed two
international years of great interest to the International Day of Light
community. Running through both years 2022 and 2023, the International Year
of Basic Sciences For Sustainable Development
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=3e4521eb5c&e=773971c1ea>(IYBSSD)
has a significant scientific component, with its key aim being to stress
the importance of basic science and long-term research to develop the
science and technologies that are essential for modern society. We would
encourage all IDL events to incorporate some messaging related to the
importance of sustainable development, and the role that light-based
technologies can play
<https://lightday.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c8c821e196c8c97b05e919d36&id=ce5fccd51a&e=773971c1ea>.
In addition to IYBSSD, the International Year of Glass

will focus on how the material of glass has influenced culture and
technology. It will also explore the essential role glass has in many areas
of society, including the many areas of science that are based on optical
technologies.

The 26th UN Climate Change summit COP26 focussed on building worldwide
consensus to accelerate action towards mitigating climate change. Liter of
Light, a Filipino-born grassroots solar lighting movement, developed a
series of highly visible solar light installations for COP26 to highlight
key messages relating to climate and climate policy.

Liter of Light’s “Messages for the Planet” campaign invited youth, climate
leaders, and climate activists worldwide to contribute short messages that
were then transformed into large-scale light billboards using hand-built
solar lights. In Scotland, a collaboration between the Liter of Light and
the University of St Andrews

created light messages of ‘Action not words’, ‘Net Zero 2035’ and ‘Save the
Planet.’ Further collaborations took place with SM Mall of Asia

in the Philippines, and Liter of Light is now planning a continuous series
of installations to continue to promote the important messaging around
climate change.

Liter of Light has been a key collaborating partner of the UNESCO
International Day of Light and the International Year of Light since 2015,
and has carried out a wide range of award-winning actions over many years
to raise awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2021, IDL Steering Committee member Light: Science & Applications (LSA)
and the exchange programme iCAN initiated the Light Doctoral Academic
League. This is a national initiative in which optics PhD candidates from
all around China can volunteer to join one of the 10 regional teams and
engage in a competition to showcase their developments in artificial
intelligence, quantum information, integrated circuits, life and health,
brain science, and all other light-related areas of science and
technology. The 2021 edition saw tremendous success, with 600 students
signed up and an online audience of 400,000. The 2022 edition is now open.
The final campaign of the Light Doctoral Academic League 2022 will be
hosted in Changchun on 16 May 2022, and the award ceremony will take
