Dear friends,
We've had some trouble sending this to the mailing list, so please forgive
me if you have received this multiple time.
This email is to inform you that the Telescopes for All project for 2021
has opened. Below is some information about your role as a NOC in this
project (even if you aren't planning to participate!).
*General Information*
Through Telescopes for All, 12 telescopes will be sent to underserved
communities around the world, with the aim of broadening the horizons of
children, parents and educators, sparking an interest in science and raise
awareness of equal opportunities for pursuing a career in astronomy. The
project is a partnership between the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach
(OAO), the Belgian project Sterren Schitteren Voor Iedereen (Stars Shine
for Everyone — SSVI), Bresser and Leiden University.
Further information on the submission process and eligibility here on the
IAU OAO website <https://www.iau.org/public/telescopecollaboration/>. An
official IAU announcement will be released on 1 April.
The OAO must receive submitted proposals and recommendations (as
applicable) by 23:59 local time on 1 June 2021.
*NOC Role/Need-to-Know Information*
1) This project is open to the public. The NOCs are also eligible to
participate. In countries in which the NOCs are participating the rules of
countries without NOCs apply to applicants from the NOC's country. These
proposals must include a letter of support from a local institution (e.g.
university, school, NGO, government, etc).
2) The applicants will submit their proposal to their NOC for a
recommendation.
- NOCs are expected to:
- Review the proposal.
- If you approve the proposal (see (3)), write a recommendation (see
(4)).
- If you endorse the application, please send the recommendation to
the applicant and ask them to email both the proposal and
recommendation to
the OAO via public en oao.iau.org.
3) NOCs recommendations should be based on:
- The credibility and reliability of the group, or institution leading
the proposal.
- The overall quality of the proposal in alignment with the Judging
Criteria (see Telescopes for All webpage
<https://www.iau.org/public/telescopecollaboration/>) and the scope of
the project that aims to provide telescopes to underserved communities
around the world.
4) Format of the NOC recommendation:
- The NOCs can choose the format in which they provide their
recommendation, such as:
1. Email. Please have the applicant forward their email exchange with
your recommendation when they send their proposal to the OAO.
2. By issuing a letter of recommendation in either your NOC letterhead
or letterhead of your choosing. Please have the applicant attach the letter
to their email to the OAO.
- Your recommendation can be as simple as "I, [your name], NOC [your
country], recommend the proposal "[title of the proposal]" led by
"[applicants name and/or group]" to the Telescopes for All 2021 Global
Project."
- You can include comments about the proposal in the recommendation but
this is not required.
- You are free to endorse as many proposals as you wish.
We are publishing a list of participating NOCs (as indicated by your annual
plans) on the Telescopes for All webpage so applicants know who they can
and can't contact for a recommendation. If you do not intend to participate
in this project as a NOC and receive an email from an applicant, please
refer them to the submission instructions on the Telescopes for All webpage
<https://www.iau.org/public/telescopecollaboration/>. *Please let Lina and
Izumi know if you decide to apply for the project or would like to be
included/removed from the published list of NOCs who are writing
recommendations for their country.*
