Dear IAU members, Dear colleagues and friends,

As we approach the end of a tumultuous 2020, this is a good time to
pause and reflect on the significant challenges we have all endured
this year. In spite of great adversities (more than corona-related
only), it has been heartening to see us stick together as a global
community. We are more connected than ever through numerous on-line
meetings and symposia, and at the same time find new ways to continue
to share our passion and the inspiration that astronomy brings with
young and old across the world. A big thanks to everyone for their
resilience and for putting the needs of others before their own, even
under difficult and heart-breaking circumstances.

There were also numerous items to cheer over the past year, ranging
from the Pale Blue Dot closing activity of IAU100 highlighting global
citizenship and environmental awareness to the formal opening of the
IAU Office of Astronomy for Education, and from the Nobel,
Kavli, Shaw and Gruber Prizes honoring our top scientists to the
Telescopes for All project educating children in disadvantaged
communities.

Several of the activities of the OAD and OAO have been made possible
by our IAU Appeal and we are grateful to all our members who
contributed.  Donations continue to be very welcome atwww.iau.org/donate/.

As 2021 is just around the corner, none of us yet know how the year
will turn out. We have lots of plans and expectations of returning to
a new "normal", but as we continue to face challenges, in the words of
Martin Luther King jr., "We must accept finite disappointment, but
never lose infinite hope." Even in our socially-distanced world, the
stars continue to shine for everyone!
