Dear friends and colleagues,
This edition of our newsletter is a special one. On September 30, the
United Nations will celebrate International Translation Day, *an
opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals, which
plays an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating
dialogue, understanding and cooperation (UN ref.
With the IAU Astronomy Translation Network (ATN) we wish to highlight the
importance of the role of our translators and the many accomplishments from
the past three years of this vibrant community of volunteers: translators,
scientific reviews and language coordinators over. Our office, in alignment
with the IAU mission of international cooperation, takes one step closer in
breaking down barriers and bringing access to astronomical information.
This program began nearly three years ago by the IAU Office of Astronomy
Outreach with support from the IAU Office of Astronomical Development

and we’d like to thank them for their valuable collaboration to the ATN
project.
In this issue, we recognize our Language Group Coordinators and
translators. Without their tireless effort and time we wouldn’t be able to
make these astronomy resources widely available. We also wanted to
highlight the translated resources and ask for you to share your stories on
how you utilize the translated materials.
Last but not least a particular word of appreciation to the special
translators of this newsletter that, some of them for almost five years,
have been continuously translating this newsletter, we wish to send our
warmest thank yous for their incredible support, present and past: Liliana
Gracanin (Serbian), Akihiko Tomita (Japanese), Catarina Leote, João
Ferreira & Jonas Souza ((European) Portuguese), Emílio Zuniga (Spanish),
Martin Pawley (Galician), Eleonora Piromalli (Italian) and Artem Mokhnaktin
(Russian).
*Wishing clear skies to you all, Lina Canas and Izumi Hansen, on behalf of
the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach Team*

*1) IAU Astronomy Translation Network (ATN): Project and Goals *
The Astronomy Translation Network (ATN) is a global volunteer-based group
increasing worldwide accessibility of astronomy outreach materials. In 2016
our research indicated that astronomy outreach materials were being created
again and again in different languages, often with different levels of
quality. In order to make sure the best astronomy materials were available
to everyone, the IAU and its partners created the translation network with
three goals:
- Provide access to the world’s best open astronomical outreach
resources without a language barrier.
- Build a network of active translators to support the translation needs.
- Provide high-quality translations through an assessment and review
process.
Through a rigorous process of translation, proofreading, and scientific
check, our 400 volunteers have created over 100 translations since the
inauguration of the network in mid-2017! Now, as the IAU moves into the
2020s, the ATN will continue to grow, providing support and opportunities
for both volunteers, educators and outreach practitioners around the world.
Visit the official website here: http://translation.iau.org/en/

.
*2) ATN Workflow: Securing Reliable Translations*
In order to ensure that translations are reliable both in language and
content, a thorough translation process was established early in the
creation of the network. Once resources are identified, either from among a
list determined by a survey or by requests, they are provided to our teams
of volunteer translators to translate. After a translation is made, another
volunteer proofreads the translation. Lastly, a trained astronomy
professional checks the content in the second language to make sure the
resources maintain scientific integrity.
You can learn more about our workflow here

.
*3) ATN Volunteers and Their Languages*
Since 2017, we’ve welcomed almost 400 volunteers interested in translating
into 55 different languages! These languages span the globe from Indonesia
to Greece, Kenya to Colombia, Bulgaria to India. Languages such as Waray
and Hiligaynon of the Philippines, Zulu of South Africa, and Georgian of
Georgia are represented by our volunteers. Without our volunteers offering
their language skills we would not be able to provide as many resources to
people around the world, so we cannot thank them enough for the energy they
give to their translations.
You can find out more about our volunteers here
<https://iau.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ecb46e29196a0f367daf3dd6&id=bdbcf1af5d&e=dc17d81cba>
.
*4) ATN Language Groups*
For languages with more translators, at least 10 volunteers, we have
created the Language Groups to more effectively translate resources. These
teams are led by our Language Group Coordinators who facilitate the
translation process for their team members. Thanks to these coordinators
and the enthusiasm that they are able to generate in their groups, we are
able to make translations for some of the more widely spoken languages.
Here we want to give our deep appreciation to them for their incredible
work.
We want to thank our Language Group Coordinators:
Portuguese (Brazilian and European) — Tereza N. P. and Catarina L.
Spanish— Teresa G. and Mariana L.
Malay — Imanda B.
Indonesian — Ratna S., Yatny Y., and Avivah Y.
French — Bérénice H.
Simplified Chinese — Liu B.
Traditional Chinese — Lauren H.
Filipino — Lanz L. and Pecier D.
Polish — Krzysztof C.
*5) Translated Resources Available*
The resources available through the Astronomy Translation Network include
educational material, namely from the astroEDU
<https://iau.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ecb46e29196a0f367daf3dd6&id=6be67cb493&e=dc17d81cba>
bank of peer-reviewed educational astronomy activities; exhibition panels;
guides; promotional materials for astronomy outreach events; and even this
newsletter! We aim to translate material released under creative commons so
that as many people can have unrestricted access to the resource.
You can find a list of all the resources available here
<https://iau.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ecb46e29196a0f367daf3dd6&id=de4d944522&e=dc17d81cba>
on the Astronomy Translation Network website.
We want our resources to be as diverse and useful to the community as
possible, so if you needs a translation of an astronomy-related resource,
you can request it here
<https://iau.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ecb46e29196a0f367daf3dd6&id=5560ad5c87&e=dc17d81cba>
.
*6) Partners and Project-based Collaborations*
The Astronomy Translation Network aims to make astronomy available to
everyone, which means supporting other organisations promoting astronomy.
Since the network began in 2017, we’ve helped World Space Week, The Globe
at Night and International Observe the Moon Night translate material to
increase accessibility to their events around the world.
We’ve also partnered with the ISIT translation school in France to provide
opportunities for students to practice their translation and management
skills in a highly specific field. Our partnership with the ISIT resulted
in guidelines for our translators in English and French as well as a
strategic plan for the network.
*7) Celebrating Diversity during the International Year of Indigenous
Languages *
This year is the International Year of Indigenous Languages and we have
been celebrating
<https://iau.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0ecb46e29196a0f367daf3dd6&id=1703842ae3&e=dc17d81cba>
the whole year. Language plays an important role in each person’s
understanding and memory and adds to our diversity of knowledge around the
world. Astronomy touches every culture, and thanks to the work of our
volunteers, more people have the opportunity to deepen their connection to
their indigenous language and their cultural connection to the stars.
*8) Join Our Network *
Astronomy has the power to break down borders. The science should be
accessible to everyone, and giving this access to astronomy enthusiasts
around the world is made possible by our volunteers. If are multilingual
and want to support access to astronomy for your friends, family, students,
superiors, country people, or people beyond your borders, join our network
here
