Astronomers just revealed the first-ever image of a supermassive black hole
and its shadow!

The photo shows the black hole at the center of Messier 87, a massive
galaxy in the nearby Virgo galaxy cluster. This black hole is 55 million
light-years from Earth and is 6.5 billion times the mass of the Sun.
To make this photo, astronomers used the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT)

a worldwide network of eight radio telescopes, that together form a virtual
telescope the size of the Earth.
Black holes are extraordinary cosmic objects with enormous masses but
extremely compact sizes. The presence of these objects affects their
environment in extreme ways, warping spacetime and super-heating any
surrounding material.
If the black hole exists in a bright area, such as a disc of glowing gas,
it creates a very dark area, comparable to a shadow. *This shadow
was predicted by Einstein's general relativity*, but we have never seen it
before. The shadow, caused by the gravitational bending and capture of
light by the so-called event horizon, reveals a lot about the nature of
these fascinating objects.

* Angeles Iglesias celebrated Einstein's Birthday and Pi Day with
her students at the Slovenian School P-244 A.M.S in Mendoza, Argentina.*
"We started the day with explaining Pi Day to all hundred primary school
children between 5 and 12 years old and their teachers. We also handed out
the *Log of the Sky*, a tool that shows all the astronomical objects that
you can observe in 2019."
“We celebrated Einstein’s birthday with the 11-12-year-old students. We had
a big round cake, cupcakes, posters, balloons, and a funny photo frame.
During the celebration, we shared information about Einstein’s life. The
students measured the cake to determine the value of Pi. The values they
obtained were 3.17, 3.13 and 3.15. With these values, they calculated the
average and talked about the possible sources for the errors.”
“On 18 March, I returned to this activity of defining Pi with my students.
They had to solve several problems, such as: *Take a cylinder and two
strings. With the strings, measure the perimeters and the diameter and
calculate how many times the diameter fits in the perimeter. *In this way,
the students knew and understood how Pi is calculated and what it is used
for."
"They also had to imagine being astronauts or space engineers, and solve
situations like: *A drill-robot is sent to Mercury. Your mission is to
drill the soil in a straight line until you reach the center of the planet.
Knowing that Mercury’s perimeter is 3,800 km, how many kilometers of soil
must the robot perforate?*”
