*1) The IAU astroEDU Selected as a Top-100 Education Initiative from Across
the World*
HundrED, is a global education nonprofit organisation that researches
inspiring innovations in education from around the world and annually
selects the 100 most inspiring initiatives. Educational practices had to
meet the criteria of being innovative, impactful and scalable to make it
onto the list. For the 2019 list, HundrED has recognized IAU astroEDU among
the top-100 innovations. The IAU astroEDU, is an open-access platform for
peer-reviewed astronomy education activities for educators to discover,
review, distribute, improve and remix according to their cultural and
linguistic needs.

*2) Astronomer Teresa Lago is the winner of the 2018 Ciência Viva Montepio
Grand Prize*
The Ciência Viva Montepio Grand Prize distinguishes Teresa Lago, our IAU
General Secretary, for her outstanding work in promoting scientific culture
as a professor, researcher, author and disseminator in the field of
astronomy. After receiving her PhD in astrophysics from the University of
Sussex, she was the founder of the Center for Astrophysics of the
University of Porto

and
created the first degree in astronomy in Portugal. The Ciência Viva
Montepio Awards are awarded annually by Ciência Viva

It is issued quarterly by the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development. Some
highlights of this issue are the news from the IAU General Assembly that
was held from Aug 20-31 in Vienna, Austria, updates on the OAD Annual Call
for Proposals and the new Coffee Table Book published by the OAD.

*4) New Arecibo Message Challenge Announced*
In 1974, the Arecibo Observatory (AO) made history by beaming the most
powerful radio message into deep space ever made. The famous Arecibo
Message was designed by AO 74’s staff, led by Frank Drake, and with the
help of the astronomer and famed science communicator Carl Sagan. It
contained information about the human race and was intended to be our
intergalactic calling card. On the 44th anniversary of the original Arecibo
message, organisers are seeking innovative ideas from global collaborative
efforts.

*5) Support African Students Attending a Space Workshop*
Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), a non profit, non governmental
organisation, is raising funds to support top African students and young
professionals to attend its 2nd African Space Generation Workshop (AF-SGW)
to be held on 17-18 December 2018 in Mauritius. This workshop is a unique
opportunity to contribute to the future of African space. Previous SGAC
workshops have literally changed lives where delegates have met potential
mentors, advisors and even employers. The contributions will directly
support the participation of our young delegates.

*6) 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast turns 10*
The 365 Days of Astronomy daily podcast celebrates its 10th anniversary in
2019. As it enters a new decade, the show is planning a new year of content
focused on the theme “Commemorating discoveries across time and culture.”
The podcast’s 10th anniversary coincides with the IAU’s centennial
celebrations and the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, a milestone
which leads us to many other great space exploration and space science
achievements. The podcast is a production of the Planetary Science
Institute, and it includes content contributed by podcasters from around

*7) Global Hands-On Universe Asian Regional Conference in Nepal*
Global Hands-On Universe (GHOU) invites teachers, students, researchers,
space enthusiasts and colleagues to register for GHOU’s first Asian
Regional meeting to be held at the Prithivi Narayan Campus, Pokhara, from
March 6-8, 2019. This regional conference aims to create a platform for
professional astronomers and educators to meet and share hands-on and
minds-on learning in the framework of the GHOU network with cutting-edge

*8) Constellations in Different Cultures*
How have cultures across the world seen their myths and legends in the
stars? Creativity combined with stories about local legends and myths have
created a diverse set of different constellations. Across the ages people
have found many different shapes in the same sky -- from humans, to
animals, to objects, and even abstract concepts. The Figures in the Sky

*9) Globe at Night 2019 Campaigns*
The Globe at Night (GaN) is a citizen-science worldwide effort to spread
awareness of the issues on light pollution and collect data to help monitor
its status. Globe at Night

has
a web-based “app” or report site that is platform independent, allowing any
cell phone to easily rate the brightness of the local night sky (or
darkness!). Smartphones will automatically record date, time and location,
so just the measurement and one of four images of the percentage of cloud
cover are needed. You can still participate in the remaining Globe at Night
2018 campaign from 29 November through 8 December.
